Day 6 – Lines of Symmetry, Rotational Symmetry, and Energy Transformations at Generating Stations

In Friday’s math class, the Grade 6s checked for symmetry by folding paper and seeing if the fold line produced two congruent halves that coincided. They also used tracing to check for rotational symmetry. Ask your child to explain how a figure can have an order of rotational symmetry of 0, 2, 3, 4, … , but not 1. Students are asked to complete the practice work on p. 104 – 107 of their MMS 6 Practice Books. They should also correct Thursday’ homework. I did not have enough time to check everyone’s homework on Friday.

During our inquiry time, students were challenged to discover how energy is transformed at generating stations to produce electricity. Students read about thermal, hydroelectric, wind, and nuclear generating stations operated by OPG. They categorised what they read as interesting or important and recorded the information in a T-chart. They then chose two types of generating stations to learn about in more detail by comparing and contrasting them using a Venn diagram. The work, concepts, and vocabulary was complex for all and everyone felt pretty drained by the end of the day. Devices with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets are needed for Monday’s electricity lesson.

At the end of the day we worked on our pinwheel art. We set out to finish up the assembly of the pinwheels by were thwarted by needles that were too bendy. A solution to this problem has been found.

Grade 6s attended gym class today.

Students should be working on their IB Learner Profile poster and be ready to present these on their scheduled date. Maram will be presenting on Monday.

Our golfing trip takes place on Monday, October 2nd. Students should come to school wearing their gym uniform. We will be leaving at 9: 00 am and returning at 12:00 pm. Parents who are volunteering are welcome to ride on the bus with us. Students will not be changing into their uniforms once back at school.

The welcome BBQ takes place from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm on Monday, October 2nd. I look forward to seeing families then.

Soccer tryouts begin next, from 4 – 5 pm, week as follows:

Girls Soccer Tryouts – Tuesday, October 3rd & Wednesday, October 4th

Boys Soccer Tryouts – Wednesday, October 4th & Wednesday, October 11th & Friday, October 13th.

International Day takes place on Thursday, October 5th . Please come and visit us in the auditorium to see our Djibouti display.
