Probability

Day 8

We began our day with math. We started a new and final math unit on probability. Today we discussed terms such as conduct an experiment, result, outcome, experimental probability and theoretical probability. Students conducted an experiment with brown paper bags and counters. They recorded their results in T-Charts, and described their results using fractions, decimals (between 0 and 1), percents, and words. Students made predictions based on their results and checked their prediction against the actual counters in the bags. Students are asked to complete the practice problems on p. 410 – 411 of the MMS textbook.

Students met in their groups to discuss chapter 11 of Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. Once discussions were complete, students had some class time to reading chapter 12 and work on the discussion questions.  Any incomplete work is due tomorrow (Thursday).

During UOI time, students learned about the summative project for our ‘Inquiry into My Digital Footprint’ unit. Students were challenged to place themselves in groups of 2 or 3 students. As a group students will be researching an issue of their choice, e.g. cyberbullying, digital literacy, digital ethics, inappropriate content, and online privacy. They were required to find a teacher/grade that they will be presenting their projects to. Their issue may be impacted with the grade or class. Groups are asked to consider appropriate topics for their grades. Finally, groups have to decide on the type of project, e.g., presentation, skit, or activity. This again will be impacted by the grade they have paired up with. We are hoping that all final presentations will take place on Monday, June 12th. Groups have formed as follows:

Real-World Safety Pledge

Day 6 & 7

My apologies for not posting a blog yesterday.

Yesterday, the class worked on correcting all their math review. Today they wrote the unit test on Perimeter, Area, and Volume. Tomorrow we begin the final math unit of the year.

Yesterday and today, students met in their groups to discuss chapter 9 & 10 of Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. Once discussions were complete, students had lots of class time to reading chapter 11 and work on the discussion questions.  Any incomplete work is due tomorrow (Wednesday).

During yesterday’s UOI time, students learned about the real-world safety pledge. They all agreed that the pledge gave good advice on ways to keep yourself safe. Everyone signed the pledge to show they will use common sense and listen to their gut to keep themselves safe. Students were asked to show and discuss the pledge with their families yesterday. Students then watched a video called Amy’s Choice, a true story about a girl who ran away from home with a stranger she met online in a private chat room. As a class, we discussed all the ways that Amy did not follow the safety pledge and put herself in danger. In today’s class we discussed different dangerous scenarios and which part of the safety pledge would keep students safe.

We are making progress on our Arts’ Night performance. Today we discussed costumes. Please talk to your child about their costume. We will need these on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week.

The Grade 6s attended French and gym class today. Music class takes place tomorrow. Everyone is reminded to bring in their musical instruments.

A number of students are returning their tree top trekking forms as there are parts that need to be completed. Please return these as soon as possible. Permission and waiver forms for Tree Top Trekking trip are past due.

Post-to-be-Private

Day 4

We began our day with novel study time. Students met in their groups to discuss chapter 7 of Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. Once discussions were complete, students had some class time to begin reading chapter 8 and working the on the discussion questions.  Any incomplete work is due tomorrow (Friday).

In math we took up yesterday’s homework on sketching polygons. Students then began review work in preparation for the unit test. Students are asked to complete review questions 1 – 6 by tomorrow. Students attending the track and field event are asked to place their review work on my desk for marking before they leave for the trip. Students not attending track and field should bring their review package to school tomorrow as we will continue working on it in class. The math unit test will be written on Tuesday, May 30th.

Four students who were nominated by their groups got to present their ‘Two Kinds of Stupid’ story to the class.

During today’s inquiry into our digital footprint, we discussed what rules should be followed when adding ‘friends’ on social networking sites. The class created a list of risks and a set of guidelines when adding friends. They participated in an activity where they decided whether or not to add someone they don’t know in real life to their friends list. They later discovered the true profiles of the people they were considering. Ask your child what they learned about their digital footprint today. Students are now asked to write a persuasive letter to help a fictional friend realise the potential dangers of using social networking sites. The letters are due on Monday. Students not attending track and field tomorrow can work on their letter in class tomorrow.

The Grade 6s attended French, music, and gym class today.

Tomorrow, students attending the track and field meet at The Maples Academy should arrive at 7:45 am. The bus will be leaving the school at 8 am. They must bring any gear needed for track & field such as sweater, hat, sunblock, lunch, snacks, etc. Students are to come to school dressed in their gym uniforms. They should bring casual clothes with them to change into for our trip to the TFC game. Students who are not attending the track and field meet should come to school dressed in their casual clothes. Everyone will be receiving a $10 voucher to purchase food that evening. It is recommended that students bring extra cash with them. The food will be purchased from the vendors at BMO field. We should return to school between 10:45 to 11:00 pm.
