Getting There

In today's math lesson, students attempted to work through the remainder of the review package they started yesterday. Not everyone managed to complete it. Packages are coming home today and should get completed for homework if students did not get done in class. The unit test will take place tomorrow.

During inquiry time, a different group worked on their action component today, and this had everybody a bit distracted as it took place outside our portable. As a result of difficulty in focussing, the class was allowed to go and help or watch for part of the time. One group has completed their display board and a second group is almost there. Groups that are ready to are beginning to practice their oral presentation. Group members that are behind stayed in during recess and gym in an effort to get caught up.

6 not 7 - Yikes!

In today's math lesson, students worked through a review package to help prepare them for Friday's unit test. Everyone was challenged to get half way through the package, i.e. to complete questions 1 to 6. Everyone  was successful in doing this. Some students are bringing the packages home in order to correct their work. Packages must be returned to school tomorrow as we will be working through the rest of the package. Students received feedback on what their weaknesses are in order to better prepare for the test.

During inquiry time, some groups worked on their action component, others worked on their display board, while others worked on their cue cards. We are all feeling the pressure of the big day quickly approaching, especially as we realised that there are 6 and not 7 days left! Groups members that are behind stayed in during recess and gym in an effort to get caught up.

Tick Tock

In today's math lesson, students applied all their knowledge for finding perimeter and area in different polygons to solve problems. Students were advised to be careful when reading the problems and to take note of what was given, such as the shape of the figure, what is known about the figure, and the formula that is needed. Students are asked to complete practice questions on p. 372 of the MMS textbook.. Students are reminded of the unit test this Friday.

During inquiry time, groups had a run through of their slideshows, with the task of allocating an equal speaking part to each group member and discussing the script for the oral component. I had chance to hear most groups present. They have received feedback from me. They have begun writing their scripts on cue cards. They will use these cards to practice their presentation and to begin memorising their lines. I had a look at display boards to see what is missing. Many students are opting to print pages in colour at home for their boards. This should be done as soon as possible. Most groups had a mentor meeting today. They showed their mentor their display board and slideshow and received valuable feedback on how to improve their work. Groups members that are behind stayed in during recess and gym in an effort to get caught up.

Surface Area of Triangular Prisms

In today's math lesson, students learned that there are a number of steps in finding the surface area of a triangular prism. We did this by using Area = (b x h) ÷ 2, to find the area of the triangular base and then doubled it to factor in the area of the other triangular face. Students know that there are 3 rectangular faces in a triangular prism. We found their area by using Area of rectangular faces = (l x w) + (l x w) + (l x w). Finally, we added the areas of the triangles to the area of the rectangles to find surface area of the prism. These calculations often take a whole page. It is worth spacing work out neatly, and writing formulas each time as mistakes as lessened. As these problems take a long time to solve, students are asked to complete only the following problems on p. 368 & 369 of the MMS textbook: 1.c), 2. b), e), f), 4. c), 7,  and 8. Students have been reminded of the unit test this Friday.

We are officially behind with our exhibition work. All groups should have completed their display boards and slideshows last Friday. Students used recess time, French time, and gym time to get caught up

Volume of Triangular Prisms

In today's math lesson, we learned that the volume of triangular prism is half the volume of a rectangular prism. Students used two formulas to calculate volume of a triangular prism. First they calculated area of the triangular face using Base Area = (b x h) ÷ 2 , then they found volume using V = Base Area x Height (of the prism). There were many steps to today's practice work and students discovered that they had to work methodically to be successful. Students are asked to complete practice questions on p. 364 - 365  of the MMS textbook.

During inquiry time, students continued working on improving their slideshows converting their survey results into a graph, planning and working on their display boards, and practicing their French component. One group has begun working on their action component.

Triangles and Parallelograms

In yesterday's fundraising assembly, students were delighted to learn that they had raised over $5000. That meant that the top earners for the day got to pie Mr. Sawatsky. Mr. Sawatsky tried to slip out of the building when he heard the news, but he was unsuccessful. Students and teachers were thrilled at this outcome! ;-).

In today's math lesson, we investigated the relationship between parallelograms and triangles that have the same base and the same area and learned that the area of the triangle is half the area of the parallelogram. Students used the formula for  a triangle that they learned yesterday, A = (b x h)/2, to solve problems involving the area of a triangle. They also constructed equal triangles that were joined to form parallelograms that had equal bases and height. Students are asked to complete practice questions on p. 360 - 361  of the MMS textbook.

During inquiry time, students continued working on improving their slideshows converting their survey results into a graph, planning and working on their display boards, and practicing their French component.

Area of a Triangle

We started our day with math. We used a practical approach to help students understand the formula for area of a triangle, A = (b x h)/2. Students draw triangles in rectangles. The cut the rectangles and triangles out and discovered that the area of the triangle is half the area of the rectangle. Students then used the formula to calculate areas of triangles and to solve problems.  Students are asked to complete practice questions on p. 356 - 357  of the MMS textbook.

During inquiry time, students continued working on improving their slideshows, planning their display boards, and practicing their French component.

Area of a Parallelogram

We started our day with math. We reviewed the characteristics of a parallelogram and why a rectangle is a parallelogram but a parallelogram is not a rectangle. Ask your child to explain this to you. Students counted squares on a grid to estimate the area of a parallelogram. They then cut a triangle out of the parallelogram and added it to the other side of the figure to create a rectangle. Students were then able to calculate actual area. This activity helped students to understand the relationship between parallelograms and rectangles and why the formula for finding the area of a parallelogram is A=b x h. Some students found it tricky to identify the base and the height. They are reminded that the height must be perpendicular to the base. Students are asked to complete practice questions on p. 353 & 354 of the MMS textbook.

During inquiry time, students continued working on improving their slideshows, planning their display boards, and practicing their French component.

Formulas

As part of our fundraising games, students from JK to Grade 10 formed teams and competed against other houses to draw the best ice-cream sundae. Well done to Zeta for winning this game. Fundraising continues all next week.

In math we continued with learning about perimeter and how to use formulas to calculate perimeter and area. Students examined the effect of doubling one side of a rectangle and both sides of a rectangle on the total area. Students are asked to complete practice questions on page 348 & 349 of the MMS textbook. Look out for math tests coming home today. Please take time to review, sign, and return the test.

During inquiry time, students continued working on conducting their surveys, composing their interview questions, creating a slideshow, planning their display boards, editing their French component, and working on their art piece. Students who did not complete the minimum amount of work had to stay in during recesses and gym to get caught up.

Elsahan

Because of their fantastic fundraising efforts, SJA students were treated to the spectacle of Elsahan - Mr. Monaghan dressed as Frozen's Elsa. We are impressed that he made it through the entire day wearing those shoes. If students continue in their efforts, poor Mr. Palumbo will have his legs waxed very soon. Ouch!!

In math we began a new measurement unit. Students learned about variables, and formulas when calculating perimeter for polygons. They are asked to complete practice questions on page 344 & 345 of the MMS textbook.

During inquiry time, students continued working on conducting their surveys, composing their interview questions, creating a slideshow, planning their display boards, editing their French component, and working on their art piece.
