Christmas Concert & Basket Weaving

Day 2

We had a final rehearsal before the noon Christmas concert.

After that, Grade 6s wrote the preassessment for the measurement unit. We will begin work on this unit in January.

Next, the class wrote the test on Bernoulli’s Principle. When they were done, students followed instructions to build an airplane. They then conducted tests to determine how changing the flaps and weight of the plane would affect its flight. We will be doing more work on this tomorrow. Students must bring their binders to school.

The first Christmas performance took place after lunch and recess. Once we had performed, we began the very tricky task of building the woven baskets for our hot air balloons. Students they finished this task became helpers to those that needed it.

The class attended gym with Mr. Slyk at the end of the day.

We look forward to seeing parents and families at tonight’s Christmas concert performance. Students should meet in the Grade 6 classroom at 6:30 pm. Students should bring a board game to play with to pass the time while we are waiting our turn to perform. Remember that the Christmas basket auction is taking place tonight.

Students will be skating at Meadowvale 4 Rinks on Thursday. Consent forms must be returned by Wednesday. Students must bring their own skates and helmets for this trip. They DO NOT have to wear gym uniforms as stated in the skating form, as this day is a Spirit Day.

Remember to return reregistration packages.

One of the students in our class is missing a blazer. Please check at home in case you took it by mistake.

Dress Rehearsal

Day 1

Students wrote their unit test on Data Management during today’s math time.

As students finished the test they began to think about the basket for their hot air balloon. We had previously said that we would be weaving paper to create the basket. Today students chose the two colours they will be using. I cut these into strips for each student. They then worked on folding the strips. Students that completed the math test quickly had more folding time than those that finished later. Students are asked to watch the video below to prepare for the basket weaving tomorrow. They may need to watch it a few times over to fully understand how to create the basket. It really will take patience and a lot of fine motor skills.

After recess we had a dress rehearsal for the Christmas concert. We enjoyed watching the other classes perform and seeing the concert from beginning to end. We are wearing hats, scarves, and gloves for our performance, to look like carolers. We look forward to seeing families at the noon and 7 pm Christmas concert performances tomorrow. Remember that there are basket auctions taking place tomorrow evening.

At the end of the day we worked on our paper airplane airport activity that we began yesterday. Students tested their planes to see if they were better at straight flight, flight over a longer distance, or curved flight. Students considered and recorded the characteristics of each plane that allowed it to be better at a task. Remember that the test on Bernoulli’s Principle will take place tomorrow.

The bake sale will take place again tomorrow.

Airfoils & Carousels

Day 10

Students began their day attending French class with Mme. Stella, and then gym class with Mr. Slyk.

Once in our room we continued working on our UOI work, where we are exploring Bernoulli’s Principle. Students matched the questions they had generated with explanations of Bernoulli’s Principle. Once this was done we used a paper to strip to build and test an airfoil. Ask your child to describe their observations during this test. Students recorded and explained their observations in their notes. We then moved onto a carousel activity. Students were given a checklist and a small white board. They each had a practice round of being the ‘teacher’ describing Bernoulli’s Principle using pictures, labels, and explanations and then being the audience/assessor. Next, we repeated this activity and this time round everyone was assessed by a peer. Ask your child to tell you how they did in this activity. Students will be tested on their understanding of Bernoulli’s Principle using the checklist they received today. The test will take place on Wednesday, December 21.

During math, we continued working on the Data Management review package. Everyone’s work has been checked and returned to them. Students used class and recess time to correct their work and to ask for help. The Data Management test will be written tomorrow.

We had some more UOI time at the end of the day. We used this time to begin learning more about flight. Students used the materials provided to build a flying device. These will be tested during class tomorrow.

We had a couple of Christmas concert rehearsals today.

Students will be skating at Meadowvale 4 Rinks on Thursday. Consent forms must be returned by Wednesday. Students must bring their own skates and helmets for this trip.

Remember to return reregistration packages.

One of the students in our class is missing a blazer. Please check at home in case you took it by mistake.

There is a bake sale taking place tomorrow and Wednesday.

Bernoulli's Principle

Day 9

Students began their day attending French class with Mme. Stella, and then gym class with Mr. Slyk.

Once in our room we continued working on our math review. Students are asked to complete the entire package for Monday. The Data Management test will be written on Tuesday, December 20.

In today’s UOI time, we took time to reflect on what we have learned so far in this unit. Students added their learning to the class KWL chart. They also recorded new question their learning has generated. The rest of class UOI time was used to develop an understanding of Bernoulli’s Principle. Students had a hard time understanding this work. The participated in a carousel activity where they explained their understanding to another student. They should review their notes and try to explain their understanding to someone over the weekend.

A skating trip form went home yesterday. Students will be skating at Meadowvale 4 Rinks. They must return the consent form by Wednesday. Students must bring their own skates and helmets for this trip.

We one Christmas concert rehearsal today.

Remember to return reregistration packages.

Math Review

Day 8

Students began their day with math. We first took up yesterday’s practice work on surveys and then began on doing review work in preparation for Tuesday’s unit test. I have checked everyone’s first two questions. Students are asked to complete questions 1 – 5 for homework. Review packages must be returned to school tomorrow as we will continue this work in class. The Data Management test will be written on Tuesday, December 20.

In today’s UOI time, students wrote a test to demonstrate what they know about the properties of air. Students that finished up early worked on their math review. Those who did not complete the OWA yesterday worked on this, while those who have not yet completed the painting of their hot air balloon worked on this.

We had a few Christmas concert rehearsals today where students got to practice their song on stage. We will be dressed as carolers for the performance, i.e. winter gear with coats, hats, gloves, ear muffs, scarves.

Students attended music, French and gym class today.

Remember to return reregistration packages.

Surveys

Day 7
Students began their day with math. We first took up yesterday’s practice work on scatter plots. We then did a new lesson on conducting surveys with particular attention to phrasing the survey question to be clearly understood, including all possible answers to the survey question, and phrasing the question in a neutral manner. Students then generated a survey question, a tally chart, and a class list to ensure they didn’t skip anyone. They conducted their survey and graphed their results. Students are asked to complete the practice work on page 199 of the MMS textbook. The Data Measurement test will be written on Tuesday, December 20.

In today’s UOI time, reviewed what we learned yesterday about how hot air balloons work. We also reviewed the experiments we conducted on Monday with blowing air. We discussed how these experiments generated results we did not expect. Students generated questions that these experiments provoked.  We then began to build an understanding of why these experiments produced these results by discussing air pressure around the Earth. This has already answered some of our questions: Why does air flow? Why does air have mass? Ask your child to explain what they learned today.

I have completed conference time with students on their persuasive letter writing OWA. Students used all their learning and the class generated checklist of criteria and wrote another persuasive letter on a new topic that they all feel strongly about.
Students attended French and gym class today.

Remember to return reregistration packages.
