Papier Mache Mayhem

Day 3

We began our day with math. We took up yesterday’s math homework on strategies and. We then did a new lesson on constructing and interpreting graphs. Students have received grid paper to complete this work. Students are asked to complete practice questions on p. 180 - 181 of the MMS textbook.

Our UOI time was incredibly fun but also fantastically messy. We used papier mache to cover balloons. These will be used to make our first model of a flying machine – the hot air balloon. I apologise for the state of many student uniforms. The balloons often rolled around, and the paste got everywhere. I hope that it comes out easily. If the papier mache is dry tomorrow we will continue our work by painting the balloons. Please have a smock at school again tomorrow to protect your uniform.

We worked more on our Christmas concert performance today. The Grade 6s are enjoying the piece and are coming up with further ideas for our performance.

Students attended gym class today.

We ended our day with UOI time. We finished up our work on the properties of air. Students are being challenged to explore study methods. The one we focused on today was mind mapping. Students heard about the advantages of mind mapping and how it engages different parts of their brains. Their assignment is to create a mind map of everything they have learned about air. Students were asked to brainstorm the criteria that would be used to assess their work. The come up with the following list:

-use curved lines (apparently our brains prefer this)

-pictures (they represent a 1000 words to our brains)

-neatness

-bright colours (our brains are stimulated by this)

-include the experiments we did that demonstrate the properties of air

-information must be accurate

-use key words

-summarise your notes

-use bold titles

Students will have class time again tomorrow to work on their mind map. The maps are due on Monday. Students will then use the mind map to study for a test on the properties of air. This test will be written on Thursday, December 15.

Remember to return reregistration packages.
