OWA Post-Assessment

As scheduled, students worked on their OWA post-assessment during today’s class time.
Students attended music class with Mr. Oliver, French class with Mme. Stella, and math class with Ms. Joseph. Ms. Joseph discussed the applications of probability. Probability can be expressed as a fraction, decimal, or percent. When expressed as a percent, the word ‘chance’ is used. An outcome is certain if it is sure to happen (getting a heads or tails when flipping a coin). An outcome is impossible if there is no chance of it happening. Students completed Q 1 & 2 from Page 422 in class. For homework they are to complete Q. 6 on Page 423 and complete the review worksheet for Monday. The tentative day for the probability unit test is Tuesday, March 3rd.
We had fun at our Jump Rope for Heart event that took place today.
The oral competition against the Maples has been moved to Monday.
Spirit week takes place on next week.
Students are to discuss with their parents what they will be bringing as a treat to the Ambassador’s tea party.

Open-Minded Assembly

We started our day attending an assembly where students were recognized for being open-minded. Congratulations to Mahhdi for receiving the open-minded in music award, to Aanika for receiving our class’ open-minded award, and to Sofia for receiving the French open-minded award. We also celebrated February birthdays this morning.

We had three sessions of inquiry time today. In the first session, students were challenged to complete the fourth and fifth pages of their brochures. In the second session, they worked to complete the final page. Their work was then self- and peer-edited before they emailed their work to me. Students who did not complete their brochures in class are to complete them for homework. Brochures are due tomorrow. Most students have submitted their brochures today. Some students are choosing to print their brochures in colour at home. Please remember to bring these to school tomorrow.
In our final session of inquiry time, we began talking about exhibition. The goal of the discussion was for students to understand the purpose of exhibition, its essential features, the process of exhibition, and the roles of students, teachers, mentors, and parents. Students are to begin thinking about local to global issues that are current. They can talk to parents about these and they can scan through recent newspaper headlines.
Look out for novel study duo-tangs coming home today. Parents, please review these with your child, sign them, and return them tomorrow.
The OWA post-assessment task is scheduled to take place tomorrow.
Students attended French class with Mme. Stella, and math class with Ms. Joseph. Ms. Joseph returned and discussed the unit test for the previous unit. The unit test needs to be signed by a parent by next math class. They also reviewed the homework on relative frequency and theoretical probability. Students are reminded to give the answer in decimals. They need to practice converting fractions to decimals. The tentative day for the probability unit test is Tuesday, March 3rd.

Pink Shirt Day

We started our day attending a Pink Shirt Day assembly. Students heard the story about how Pink Shirt Day was started. They then were treated to an anti-bullying skit performed by Mr. Whetstone, Mr. Oliver, Ms. Blair, Ms. Jaskolka, and Mr. Foster and his students. Finally, our Grade 4 student, Arya, recited her speech about bullying.

We had two sessions of inquiry time today. In the first session, students were challenged to complete one page of their brochure. In the second session, they worked two complete 2 more pages. Students who did not complete these 3 pages are to complete them for homework. We will use tomorrow’s class time to complete the remaining 3 pages. Devices are needed tomorrow as we work on this project. Brochures are due on Friday.

Completing the Research

We started our day attending a Pancake Tuesday assembly. Students in their three houses competed against each other to be the first to eat all pancakes. Well done to Zeta, Kappa, and Theta for placing first, second, and third respectively.
We had three sessions of inquiry time today. In the first session, students were challenged to complete the remaining two sections of their graphic organizer regarding their country’s PEPS features. The rewards for achieving this was getting to go out for recess. Most students completed this work in the time allotted. In the second and third sessions, students were required to complete their research about their country’s offerings (connections) and needs (causation). I conferenced with students throughout this time to check on their note-taking and research skills. Some students made excellent use of this conferencing time and met with me multiple times to receive feedback. Others were more reluctant and only met with me when I called them over.
Students received a tutorial on how to use Word and Google Docs to create a trifold brochure. Devices are needed tomorrow and Thursday as we work on this project. Brochures are due on Friday.
I complete all OWA conferences this morning. The OWA post-assessment task is scheduled to take place on Friday.
Students attended French and math class today. In math, Ms. Joseph reviewed the homework on tree diagrams and introduced relative frequency. Relative frequency is the number of times an outcome occurs divided by the number of times the experiment is conducted. This is also called experimental probability. For homework, students are to complete Q 1, 2 & 3 from page 413 of their textbooks.
Continue fundraising for Jump Rope for Heart.
The next Caribou contest will be taking place Wednesday, February 26th, 2020. Students are to arrive at 7:15 am for a 7:30 am start. They should bring their own charged devices.
The interactive question for Grades 2-10 will be Bomb Defuser and for Grade 11/12 it will be GeomeTree requiring a construction involving lines and circles. Because Caribou’s GeomeTree site can be used to solve the interactive question, this site will be blocked at noon on Tuesday, February 25th. Both interactive questions are accessible from
Caribou’s Games/History page. Contact Caribou directly if you have any problems with the games. There will be no history question in the February contest.
March Lunches
The lunch site is now open. It will close on Wednesday, February 26th, at 3:00pm sharp. The special of the month is French Toast with Whipped Cream and Syrup. All payments are to be made through QuickBooks by March 6th.
Tomorrow is Pink Shirt Day. Students are asked to come to school wearing a pink shirt. Students who choose not to participate are to come to school in uniform. The bake sale continues tomorrow.
The oral competition against the Maples takes place on Thursday.
The Jump Rope for Heart takes place on Friday. Students are to come to school in their phys. Ed. Uniforms.
