Focusing the Inquiry

We had an award’s assembly this morning. Congratulations to Christiaan for receiving the Caring Award for our class, and to Jayden for receiving the French Caring Award.

Once in class we got going on exhibition. Today’s goals for each group were to write the key concept questions, central idea, and lines of inquiry relating to their issue. We discussed how to accomplish this. There was much collaboration between group members who then met with me and with their mentors if possible. Students received feedback on how to improve their work. Once this was done students completed their first journal entry. Most groups completed this work and got to go to gym.

Students had math class today. They worked on drawing circle graphs. They discussed how to get the data when a circle graph is given and completed one question from the textbook. For homework they are to complete questions 1 & 2 from the worksheet. The unit test will take place on Friday, April 5th.

Bouldering permission and waiver forms are due on Monday, April 1st.

Students are reminded to keep practicing for the spelling bee. The Grade 6 in-class bee will take place on Thursday, April 4th. The Grade 7/8 in-class spelling bee will be held on Tuesday, April 2nd.

Spring fundraising payments can still be made.

Starting to Understand the Issues

Today was a less exciting day in Grade 6 as students got down to reading to learn more about their exhibition topic. The goal was to read enough to generate a general understanding of the issue. Information was recorded in the exhibition binders. A minimum of 3 pages of note-taking was expected from each group member. This part of exhibition can be tedious. Students are encouraged to persevere as this is the foundation for all the work they will do. Many students visited Ms. Hayward to have their citation formatting checked. Ms. Hayward even visited our class as she discerned that students needed her support. Some groups attended their mentor meetings today. All groups need to have a mentor meeting before the end of day Friday.
I had some meetings with students as they worked in preparation next week’s conferences.

Devices will be needed. Instead of music time, Mr. Oliver visited our class and supported students as they worked. He will be doing this until groups decide on their performance component for exhibition.
Grade 6 parents are invited to attend an Exhibition Information Session this Thursday, March 28th, from 4:00 pm – 4:30 pm. This will take place in our classroom, Room 24. The purpose of the information session is to give parents an overview of the expectations of exhibition, the various roles, and to answer questions families may have. This session is optional. The information you receive today regarding exhibition may answer all your questions. If, however, you require more information or have questions, please come to the information session.

A Junior Achievement workshop titled Be Entrepreneurial will take place all day this Thursday, March 28th and will be hosted by FedEx. There is no cost for the workshop.
Students had math and French class today. In math students took up yesterday’s math homework. They practiced more questions on finding the cost of an item after discounts and sales tax. An area that students need to focus on for improvement is the multiplication and division of decimals. For homework they are to complete the worksheet on Chapter 8.3 and first two pages of the mid-unit review worksheet. The tentative date for the unit test is Thursday, April 4th.

Return the bouldering permission and waiver form. The forms are due on Monday, April 1st.
We had a mock spelling bee in class today. Students are reminded to keep practicing for the spelling bee. The Grade 6 in-class bee will take place on Thursday, April 4th. The date for the in-class Grade 7/8 spelling be is TBD.

Spring fundraising payments are due tomorrow.

The Big Reveal - Our Exhibtion Issues, Groups, & Mentors

Today was an exciting day in Grade 6. Students learned the issue they will be investigating for exhibition, their group members, and who their mentors are this morning. They received their exhibition binders, letters for parents, an exhibition planning journal, a research and note-taking checklist & rubric, and a template for recording their mentor meetings. We spent time reading through the parent letter. We discussed how students need to be good communicators in order for parents to support their needs. We reviewed the exhibition schedule and set some due dates. We reviewed the roles of students in the exhibition and the requirements of exhibition. Students re-arranged themselves into their exhibition groups and changed the arrangement of tables in order to carve out space to work in. Once in groups they worked on creating an essential agreement that will govern their attitudes and work ethic through this process.

Ms. Hayward visited our class today and involved students in an hour long workshop on research skills, academic honesty, and how to cite sources using MLA formatting. Students practiced citing websites, books, articles, and magazines using MLA formatting. Students can review what Ms. Hayward shared by visiting her library website pages. Ms. Hayward shared a curated source available to our students called Canada in Context. Students have received the password to access this site. They are encouraged to use this site to find resources for their exhibition research. Ms. Hayward will be available to exhibition groups as a mentor when it comes to finding sources and for advice on how to correctly use MLA formatting for citing their sources.

After lunch and recess, students were encouraged to introduce themselves to their mentors and set up their first mentor meeting sometime this week. Students are expected to meet with their mentors once a week. Students also used this time to begin understanding their issue. They will continue this work in class tomorrow.

Students had math and French class today. In math students discussed finding the percent of a number by multiplying. Students are reminded to place the decimal points accurately for multiplication and division. They also practiced word problems to find the total cost of an item including the sales tax. For homework they are to complete Page 304 - Q 1-5. The tentative date for the unit test is Thursday, April 4.

Critical Thinking and Web Literacy

Grade 6s are being prepared for exhibition. They began their day watching videos and reading letters from previous Grade 6 students at SJA who offered advice on the challenges and successes they experienced with exhibition.

Ms. Chin was up next. She presented Alan November’s workshop on Critical Thinking and Web Literacy. Students fell for fake news in this session. Ask your child to tell you about this. They learned how to check if websites can be trusted, how to better refine their search terms, how to select educational sources, and how to select for a particular country’s domain when searching for information using the Internet.

Students will learn their exhibition issues, group members, and mentors tomorrow.

Students then spent some time reflecting on our Canada in the World inquiry unit. Students learned that that will be treated to a Junior Achievement workshop titled Be Entrepreneurial. This workshop will take place all day this Thursday, March 28th and will be hosted by FedEx. There is no cost for the workshop.

Students had gym, math, and French class today. In math they used mental math to estimate and calculate percentages. Students are reminded to change to 'friendly' fraction (denominator of 5, 10, 20, 25, 50) to estimate percents. They practiced questions from the textbook - Page 299 Q 2 & 3. For homework they are to complete Page 300 Q 7 (a-h).

Look out for information about the annual spring fundraiser coming home today.

Students are reminded to keep practicing for the spelling bee.
