Moving Air

We began our day taking up yesterday’s test on the properties of air. Students are bringing these tests home. Please take time to review the test with your child, sign it, and return it to school tomorrow. We ended this segment of our unit by having students reflect on what they have learned by adding to the ‘Learned’ section of the KWL chart.

We then began a new round of investigations, this time involving moving air and paper. In each situation, students made predictions, carried out the investigations, and tried to explain the observations. Overall, they were surprised by the direction of movement, or lack of movement. Ask your child to explain what happened to you. Tomorrow, students will learn the ‘why’ behind what they saw today. The next test will take place on Monday, November 5th. More details about this test will follow over the remainder of this week.

Remaining class time was used to work on science fair. Students could go out to first recess if they had completed their post-construction sketch. About ¾ of the class have not reached this stage yet.

Due to Halloween/Harvest Spirit Day, we had a house game scheduled during today’s math time. We bargained with Mr. Oliver, and he reluctantly let us have his music time in order for students to be able to write the math test today. Those who did not get done in this time, used second recess as extra time. Students who completed the math test worked on their pinwheel art. We are making progress as more than half the class has now completed this.

Grade 6s attended French today.

Trip forms and payments for the warplane museum trip are now past due. Curling trip permission and waiver forms are due on Friday.

Look out for March Break Forms coming home today.

Students are receiving copies of the Guy Fakes Day poem to memorise for Monday.

Density & Buoyancy

During my absence yesterday, the class continued their inquiry into the properties of air. They learned how the Particle Theory of Matter can be used to explain the change in state from a solid, to liquid, to a gas. They also learned how air is a fluid, and how hotter air (being less dense) can float on cooler air. They conducted their own hot air balloon experiment with Ms. Hayward. Today we took up yesterday’s learning, reviewed the particle theory of matter, completed the density tower using the particle theory of matter to help us, and discussed possible reasons why they class was not able to get the hot air balloon to stay up for a long time yesterday. As a class we did further reading about how air that is hotter can be said to ‘be lighter’ than air that is cooler, and how hotter air floats on cooler air. We discussed density and buoyancy in more depth to better understand why this happens. Once all questions were answered, students wrote their ‘Properties of Air’ test. The next test will take place on Monday, November 5th. More details about this test will follow over the remainder of this week.

Remaining class time was used to work on science fair. Students could go out to first recess if they had completed their post-construction sketch. About ¾ of the class have not reached this stage yet.

Our final 20 minutes of class was spent working on our pinwheel art.

More on the Properties of Air

Our pattern of work has remained the same this entire week.

We started our day working on our flight inquiry. We discussed yesterday’s investigations into the properties of air. Students checked their work. We discussed what could be inferred or concluded about air’s properties from each investigation. Today students learned that 1 L of air at 20°C has more mass than 1 L of air at 80°C. We discussed how the ratio of mass to volume is a measure of density which in turn determines buoyancy of a solid, liquid, and even gas. Students learned that because of this principle, hot air balloons are also known as lighter than air flying devices.  Students continued creating a mind map to represent their learning from these investigations. They will add to the mind map daily. The class then worked on further investigations involving air. Today’s investigation involved floating a ping pong ball, making a balloon rocket, displacing air and water, and lifting books with air. Ask your child to tell you about these investigations. We will take up these investigations on Monday. Students are asked to add all new information to their mind map if they did not get done in class. Grade 6s will be writing a test on the properties of air on Tuesday, October 30th.

Next we worked on language. Students continued their inquiry into what makes a narrative a fable or a legend. They read the final two samples of narrative writing and added to their list of what made the samples effective. Students will be using this list to improve their own writing. We will begin narrative writing conferences next week.

Students who were behind in writing their book report on The City of Ember have now all caught up with their work. A number of students worked on their electric cars. Two students have completed their pinwheel art projects.

Grade 6s attended gym, French, and math class today.

Trip forms and payments for the warplane museum trip are now past due.

Air expands and Contracts

Today’s blog looks almost the same as yesterday’s as we followed the same pattern of work and continued work on the same concepts.
We started our day working on our flight inquiry. We discussed yesterday’s investigations into the properties of air. Students checked their work. We discussed what could be inferred or concluded about air’s properties from each investigation. Students continued creating a mind map to represent their learning from these investigations. They will add to the mind map daily. The class then worked on further investigations involving air. Today’s investigation involved placing air in hot and cold water, as well as heating air up with candles. Ask your child to tell you about these investigations. We will take up these investigations tomorrow. Students also read about the properties of air. Students are asked to add all new information to their mind map if they did not get done in class. Grade 6s will be writing a test on the properties of air on Tuesday, October 30th.

Next we worked on language. Students continued their inquiry into what makes a narrative a fable or a legend. They read two more samples of narrative writing and added to their list of what made the samples effective. Students will be using this list to improve their own writing.
Grade 6s continued writing their book report on The City of Ember. Some students have still not completed this task. Students that have completed their book report worked on their electric cars. Some students worked on their art or their art reflections.

Grade 6s attended music, French, and math class today. In math, students did number patterns and practiced questions from the textbook. For homework students are to complete the worksheet.
Students are reminded to pay for the warplane trip and return forms by tomorrow.
Look out for a curling trip form coming home today. These forms are due on Friday, November 2nd.

We started our day working on our flight inquiry. We discussed yesterday’s investigations into the properties of air. Students checked their work, confirming if they had correctly identified the variables in the investigations. We discussed what could be inferred or concluded about air’s properties from each investigation. Students are creating a mind map to represent their learning from these investigations. They will add to the mind map daily. The class then worked on further investigations involving air. We will take up these investigations tomorrow. The class finished up their entries for the Polar Expressions poetry competition. These will be mailed off this week.
