How the World Works: Flight

Many of our classmates were away for the soccer trip today. Those who remained at school began working on our new inquiry unit.

An Inquiry into how the world works

An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.

Title: Flight

Central Idea: Air has many properties that can be used for flight and for other purposes.

Concepts: Form, Function, Causation

Lines of Inquiry:

             The properties of air

             The shapes that produce lift

Societal and environmental impacts of flying devices that make use of the properties of air

Students also heard what the summative task for this unit will be. Students then began brainstorming what they already know about air and flight. This information was discussed in groups, shared with the class, and then recorded on a KWL chart. Grade 6s will be writing a properties of air test on Tuesday, October 30th.

Today students began working on a large task – writing a book report on The City of Ember. AS this took everyone a long time, we did not have time to work on science fair today. Students will receive about 30 minutes of class time to finish up their book reports tomorrow.

There are a few students who have not submitted the Polar Expressions Entry form. Please return this ASAP if it applies to you.

Grade 6s attended gym, French, and math class today.

Look out for a trip form coming home today. We will be on a trip on November 20th. Please do not order a hot lunch for this day.
