Density & Buoyancy

During my absence yesterday, the class continued their inquiry into the properties of air. They learned how the Particle Theory of Matter can be used to explain the change in state from a solid, to liquid, to a gas. They also learned how air is a fluid, and how hotter air (being less dense) can float on cooler air. They conducted their own hot air balloon experiment with Ms. Hayward. Today we took up yesterday’s learning, reviewed the particle theory of matter, completed the density tower using the particle theory of matter to help us, and discussed possible reasons why they class was not able to get the hot air balloon to stay up for a long time yesterday. As a class we did further reading about how air that is hotter can be said to ‘be lighter’ than air that is cooler, and how hotter air floats on cooler air. We discussed density and buoyancy in more depth to better understand why this happens. Once all questions were answered, students wrote their ‘Properties of Air’ test. The next test will take place on Monday, November 5th. More details about this test will follow over the remainder of this week.

Remaining class time was used to work on science fair. Students could go out to first recess if they had completed their post-construction sketch. About ¾ of the class have not reached this stage yet.

Our final 20 minutes of class was spent working on our pinwheel art.

Grade 6s attended gym, French, and math class today. In math, students discussed the unit review and practiced questions in preparation for tomorrow’s unit test.

Trip forms and payments for the warplane museum trip are now past due. Curling trip permission and waiver forms are due on Friday.
