Congratulations to Divyansh, Emana, and Daniel for being recognized in this morning’s assembly for being thinkers in our class, in French, and in Physical Education respectively.

Today we focused on UOI reflections, and reflecting on ourselves as learners. Students prepared for the student-led conferences that take place next week. They also chose samples of work to add to their IB portfolios. This all sounds very simple and easy but it too an astonishing amount of time.

Grade 6s visited the Grade 5 Museum of Ancient Civilization and reminisced about when they did this project last year.

To celebrate the last day of the term, we watched The City of Ember movie.

At the very end of the, we spent a little time rehearsing our Christmas concert dance moves.

Students attended French class today.

We are curling on Monday. Students are to come to school in their gym uniform. Remember to bring helmets!

Look out for report cards coming home today.

Look out for information about the Parent Guild Christmas Skate event. This is coming home today.

Christmas concert rehearsals are beginning to take up more of our daily time. We went the Dome twice today; the first time was in the morning to practice the introductory song and the second time was at the end of the day when we rehearsed our performance.

Students worked on their Term 2 OWA pre-assessment. Persuasive writing will form a large part of Term 2’s language time. Today students wrote a persuasive letter to the principal regarding their opinion on school uniforms.

I conferenced with each student today regarding their Term 1 OWA on fable and legend writing. We discussed areas of strength, areas of weakness, and what needs to be done to bring about improvement.

Students attended math class today. Ms. Joseph introduced the class to the multiplication of decimals. To multiply decimals, first multiply as if there is no decimal. Next, count the number of digits after the decimal in each number. Finally, put the same number of digits behind the decimal in the product. Homework - Complete Q 3-8, 11 & 12 from the lesson 4.7

Tomorrow is the last day to purchase items from the book fair. The book fair closes at 1 pm.

Report Card Comments

We spent this morning working on our report card comments after brainstorming what we have covered this term as a group.

Students have expressed a desire to get into the Christmas spirit by decorating their table groups and by participating in Secret Santa. Table group decoration will begin on Monday once students are placed in their new groupings for our new inquiry unit. As a class, the decision was made that the minimum and maximum amounts to be spent for Secret Santa gifts are $10 and $25. Gifts will be exchanged during the last week of school before the Christmas Break.

Later in the day we worked on our Christmas concert performance.

Students attended French, music, P.E., and math class today. In math, students worked on their mid-unit quiz.

The Air Show

We spent most of our time together working on our flight summative task today. In the morning, students who had not finished up graphing their results worked on this. Once graphing was done, it was time to analyze the results. Based on their analysis, students made their conclusions either accepting or rejecting their hypothesis. They reflected on the experiment, discussing how the results are useful, how the investigation could be improved, and any further questions they had. They used their learning to help them decide which paper plane they would like to use in the Air Show. They prepared for the Air Show by folding the plane of their choosing.

Later in the day, we went outside for the Air Show. Again, we had wonderful weather and very little wind to affect the results. Students tested their planes and their throwing. They decided which direction to throw in so that their planes flew with the wind instead of against it. It was then Show Time! Well done to Divyansh, Emana, and Jaiden taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively. Back in class, students finalised their flight reports and handed them in for marking.

At the end of the day we visited the book fair. Students may be coming home with wish lists today. When we returned to class, we had a very atypical day – students relaxed and read a book of their choosing.

Students attended French and math class today. In math, Ms. Joseph discussed the mid-unit review with the class. They practiced addition, subtraction and repeated addition of fractions. Students are reminded to show all the steps leading to the final answer. They are also reminded to find the LCM and to write the equivalent fraction before proceeding with the mathematical operation. For multiplication of a fraction with a whole number, they will multiply the numerators and keep the denominator the same as that of the fraction. Reminder – Mid-Unit Quiz on Wednesday.

Look out for Pick A Time letters coming home today. This letter provides families with the link, student ID, and Security Value to schedule appointments with teachers on our conference day, next week Thursday, December 5th, 2019. The system will go live on Thursday, November 28th at 10 am

Conducting the Trials

We spent all our time together working on our flight summative task. In the morning, students folded and prepared their planes and prepared their data collection charts. In the afternoon we went outside to the turf, where students conducted all their trials. We were fortunate to have mild weather which made this a much more pleasant experience compared to what it has been like in the past two years.

At the end of the day, students calculated the average distance each plane traveled and began working on graphing their results. As we have done previously, students will use spreadsheets to do this, either Google Sheets or Excel. Some students have already completed and emailed me their graphs. Students will receive about 20 minutes of class time to finish this up tomorrow if they did not get done in class today. Students have the option of printing their graphs in colour at home. Printouts must be brought to school tomorrow as they are needed for the next step – analyzing the results.

Students attended French and math class today.

Homework and Reminders

Email me your graphs (or share them with me) if you have completed them OR print them out in colour (if you prefer) and bring the printouts to school tomorrow
