Christopher Columbus

Sorry for the late post.

Yesterday in math, we worked on making multiple transformations on a figure. Students drew the figures and images on grid paper. They recorded the positions of the vertices using coordinates and named the vertices using the prime, double prime, or even triple prime notation. Students discovered that accuracy was greatly increased when they traced the original figure onto tracing paper and manipulated the tracing accordingly. We made good progress with the practice questions in class. Students are asked to finish up the remaining questions on p. 254 & 255 for homework. Students are bringing home their measurement retest. Please take time to review the test with your child, sign it, and return it to school.

We then worked on our inquiry unit. We reviewed the reasons for European exploration and finished up our lesson on Portuguese explorers. Students are bringing home their Vikings test.

Students then met in literature circle groups to discuss chapter 7 of Copper Sunrise. They had class time to read chapter 8 and complete their reflections of chapter 8.

Students attended French and Drama class.

Due to the class time being missed as result of special events, Grade 6s were kept out of gym to catch up on inquiry work. We used this time to learn about Spanish explorers. Students are brining home a worksheet that they need to complete at home. They will need to research some of the goals and challenges that Christopher Columbus faced in his voyages to the Americas. Ask your child what they learned in this lesson. We will begin working on our summative projects for this unit text week. Students will be creating a website. They will need access to a device where they can perform research as well as create the website. They are asked to bring a device to school all next week, except Wednesday.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Speech Contest

Grade 6s had a wonderful time skiing yesterday.

Most of our class time today was taken up with our class speech competition. The Grade 5 students joined us for this event. Mr. Palumbo and  I had the difficult task of placing students from each grade into the  top 3 positions. To hep make this decision easier, we asked students to participate in a secret ballot where they voted on who they thought deserved first, second, and third place. I was proud of the effort by Grade 6 students. Well done to all on the hard work that was done in researching for, writing, and memorising the speech as well as the bravery in presenting in front of a large audience.

The following students have been selected to move forward to the next round of the competition: Zachary, Julia, and Temi.

Today was SJA's annual pancake eating contest. Each house was served a huge stack of pancakes. They were challenged to finish off every crumpet! Well done to KIP for taking first place in this contest and Theta for taking second place. Students also participated in a house game.

In class, we got working on speeches right away. We had a mock in-class oral competition. Each student received valuable feedback on how to improve the recitation of their speech from their classmates and from myself.  The biggest overall area for everyone to work on is MEMORIZATION and VOLUME. Many students do still not have their speeches memorised. There are no more school days available to practice as we are skiing tomorrow and the in-class competition takes place on Thursday. Students are asked to submit a good copy of their speech on Thursday.

We managed to squeeze in some UOI time today. We finished up discussing and recording the effects that new ideas had on exploration. Students then heard about what Portuguese explorers accomplished during the Age of Exploration.

MacBeth

Students used the short time we had in class this morning to write their measurement retest as well as their Vikings test.

Students from The Maples arrived at that time to watch the SJA production of MacBeth.  Grade 6s from both schools worked on collaborative activities before the play. They worked in groups to keep a balloon off the ground without using their feet while holding hands in a circle. They played a  human knot game before working together to decide which math functions should be used to solve problems.

We then headed to the gym for the performance, which the students enjoyed. After the performance SJA and The Maples got into their houses and participated in house games.

At the end of the day, I met with students to review the progress they have made on their speeches. Each student has been instructed to rewrite or type up a good copy of the  speech and memorise it. Each student also received pointers to focus on for their presentation. They are bringing home a rubric which will be used to grade them and place them on Thursday, February 19. We will have a practice run of the oral competition on Tuesday. Everybody MUST have the speech memorised for this day.
