Criteria for Effective Persuasive Letter Writing

We started our time together working on language – specifically persuasive letter writing. Students have been working on other persuasive writing this term, such as speeches, and persuasive script writing for the ‘Welcome to _____, Canada’ videos. Today, students read a sample of student writing. With a partner they discussed the writing strengths of the piece. We are using student ideas to generate of list of criteria for effective letter writing. Students will use this piece to guide them as they write their OWA post-assessment task next week.
Later in the day we had inquiry time. We used this time to take up student research where they compared Canada and the USA in terms of their PEPS features.
Students attended music class with Mr. Oliver, gym class with Mr. Orr, French class with Mme. Stella and math class with Ms. Joseph. In math, students took up the math review worksheet for the unit.  For homework they are to complete a second review worksheet. I recommend that this is done today as students will be tired after skiing/snowboarding all day tomorrow. This work is due on Thursday. The unit test has been moved to Friday, February 21.
Look out for Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser forms coming home today.
Our second skiing trip takes place tomorrow. Students are to arrive at 6:45 am – meet in the PYP cafeteria. Bring a lunch/$ and snacks/$, gloves, snow pants, goggles (labeled and if you have them), layers/extra clothing. We will be back for regular dismissal time.
The next Caribou contest will be taking place Wednesday, February 26th, 2020. Students are to arrive at 7:15 am for a 7:30 am start. They should bring their own charged devices.
The interactive question for Grades 2-10 will be Bomb Defuser and for Grade 11/12 it will be GeomeTree requiring a construction involving lines and circles. Because Caribou’s GeomeTree site can be used to solve the interactive question, this site will be blocked at noon on Tuesday, February 25th. Both interactive questions are accessible from
Caribou’s Games/History page. Contact Caribou directly if you have any problems with the games. There will be no history question in the February contest.
