Spelling Bee

Day 9

Well done to Farah for taking first place in the Grade 6 Spelling Bee! Well done to all who participated. It can be very stressful spelling out loud in front of a large audience.

In math we continued our new measurement unit. We took up yesterday’s homework on the area of triangles. In our new lesson we used grid paper to discover that two congruent triangles can be arranged to form a parallelogram. This reinforced for students why the formula for area of a triangle is A = (b X h)/2. Students are asked to complete the practice questions on p. 360 - 361 of the MMS textbook.

We continued working on our new novel study today. Students met in their groups to discuss chapter 2 of Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. Once discussions were complete, students had some class time to begin reading chapter 3 and working the on the discussion questions. Students are working on point of view as they read chapter 3.  Any incomplete work is due for tomorrow.

We continued working on our Digital Footprint inquiry unit. Today students asked and found the answers to the following questions:

What is a digital footprint?

What is a digital literacy?

What is digital ethics?

Students have been encouraged to discuss these questions with their families tonight and as we work through this unit. For their first project, students are asked to work with a parent to find a story of a child, teen, or adult that was suspended, expelled, fired, etc. as a result of something they posted to the Internet or social media. Students have a page or responses to complete. This work is due on Wednesday, May 24th. To get us started on this, we watched a video called ‘Two Kinds of Stupid’. Students discussed why the video had this title. Ask your child to tell you about it. The class is asked to consider how what the post online may have consequences for them in the future.

The Grade 6 class attended a Track and Field Assembly at the end of the day.

Due to the Spelling Bee this morning, the class did not attend gym or French class.

We ended the day with a Track and Field Assembly where awards were given to students for their performance last Friday.

The ordering system for June lunch is up and open. Please ensure you place your order no later than May 19th at 4:00 pm. Lunch payment is due by May 23rd 4:00 pm.
