Friend or Fake

Day 3

We began our day with math, where we continued our measurement unit.  We took up yesterday’s homework on surface area of triangular prisms. Today’s new lesson was about sketching polygons. We did a couple of practice problems as class. Students are asked to complete the practice work on pages 372 of the MMS textbook. The math unit test will be written on Tuesday, May 30th if all goes according to plan.

During today’s inquiry into our digital footprint, we discussed how tricky it can be to know if a person you have met online is a friend or a fake. Students were introduced to the expression ‘raising a red flag’. We discussed this expression and students know it is when a situation makes you feel uncomfortable and may indicate something dangerous could happen. Students were asked to pay attention when they experience this feeling. We watched a video called ‘Friend or Fake’.  We had a class discussion about the things the on-line friend said that raised a ‘Red Flag’.

Students were presented with scenarios. They decided if the scenarios raise a red flag or not.

The class is asked to record what an on-line friend may say, and what an on-line predator may say on the sheet they were provided. They also need to write an email offering advice to a friend on how to spot an online fake. These are to completed for homework.

At the end of the day, students presented their ‘Two Kinds of Stupid’ story to their groups. The groups conducted a peer assessment on the presenters. The following students have been nominated by their groups to present to the whole class tomorrow: Arya, Farah, and Leah.

We continued working on our novel study today. Students met in their groups to discuss chapter 6 of Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. Once discussions were complete, students had some class time to begin reading chapter 7 and working the on the discussion questions.  Any incomplete work is due tomorrow (Thursday).

The Grade 6s attended French and gym class today.

On Friday, students attending the track and field meet at The Maples Academy should come to school dressed in their gym uniforms. They should bring casual clothes with them to change into for our trip to the TFC game. Students who are not attending the track and field meet should come to school dressed in their casual clothes. Everyone will be receiving a $10 voucher to purchase food that evening. It is recommended that students bring extra cash with them.

We still need one more parent volunteer for our Tree Top Trekking trip. This parent must be comfortable with participating in the activities.

Permission and waiver forms about our Tree Top Trekking trip are due this Friday, May 26th.

Our annual Art's Night is only two weeks away!! Please join us on Wednesday, June 7 at 7:00 PM. You may also join us at our dress rehearsal which begins at 1:00 PM. Our theme this year is Music through the Eras! You are in for a fantastic night of art, dance, and song! We are asking that students be at the school 6:30 pm to get ready. We will also be selling treats and baked goods, so get ready for what is sure to be a wonderful evening.
