The Marketplace

Grade 6s had art class with Ms. Kerr and Gym class with Mr. Slyk this morning.

Students were introduced to our new unit of inquiry:

An Inquiry Into: How we organize ourselves

An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment

The Marketplace

Central Idea

The ability to produce more goods than needed gives rise to systems for exchanging merchandise and the creation of market

Key Concepts:

Causation, Responsibility

Lines of Inquiry:

·         How goods and services are exchanged in marketplaces

·         How we depend on people in other places for products

·         How global movement and communication affect the availability of goods

Students reflected what they already know about this Canada and its trading partners and shared their ideas with the class. They also shared what they would like to learn about during this unit. They recorded their ideas in a KWL chart. We will be doing some map work during this unit. To start us off, students are asked to review Canada’s provinces, territories, capital cities, and bodies of water. They have been assigned a map work page to do for homework. They will be writing a test on Friday that will cover all concepts learned this week.

After recess and lunch we began work on a new math unit – Transformational Geometry. We discussed the learning goals for this unit and then began the new lesson. We reviewed translations, reflections, and rotations. We discussed how Grade 6 showing your work compares to lower grades. Students are expected to be very specific, detailed, and to use appropriate vocabulary, e.g. rotate the figure 270 degrees clockwise around rotation point (5, 3). Students received grid paper, coordinate paper, and tracing paper to complete the practice questions on p. 250 & 251 of the MMS textbook.

We then worked on speeches. We read about the different ways to start the introduction paragraph. Students were expected to choose a way to begin their introduction. They could use class time to research quotes, facts, statistics, or anecdotes for their paragraph. They are then to use transitional words to introduce their reasons in the same order that they will appear in the speech. Students are expected to complete the first draft of the introduction by tomorrow.

We continued working on our Marketplace UOI after second lunch. We spent time learning some vocabulary students need to be comfortable with using during this unit. Students worked in a group to think of ways in which Canada is linked to the world. Students will need a device to do research tomorrow.

Please note changes to the curling dates and the addition of skiing dates. Skiing forms will be coming home soon.
