The Cubic Metre

Grade 6s attended French class with Mme. Villeneuve and Gym class with Mr. Slyk this morning

We used the time after gym and much of first recess to take up yesterday’s homework on volume. Question 8 was one that the class in general had difficulty with. We took time to go carefully through this problem. Everyone should review this work to ensure they have a good understanding of these concepts.

After lunch, we began a new lesson on the cubic metre. As class we built a skeleton of a cubic metre to ensure students gain an excellent understanding of this concept. While holding a cubic centimetre in their hand and looking at our cubic metre, students were asked to predict how many cubic centimetres it would take to fill the cubic metre and how long this would take. We discussed the difference between linear, square, and cubic measures. We also converted a cubic metre to cubic centimetres. Ask your child to explain how this is done. Students were able to check if their predictions were correct. We did not have class time for students to begin today’s practice work. Everyone is asked to complete the problems on MMS p. 230 & 231 for homework.

After math was UOI time. Students chose a colour for their art piece. They used black to make shades of this colour and white to make tints. Everyone was expected to complete this artwork before the end of the day. That meant that everyone was painting during UOI time and through recess time. Expect to have a tired child coming home today. The art UOI ends next week. For their final project, students will choose an individual art project to work on next week. They should look up ideas over the weekend as well as collect materials that they know are not available in our classroom. Students will have class time on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to complete this project. They will present their projects on Thursday. Students should describe the art form, name an artist that uses this art form, display a sample of the artist’s work, describe the steps needed to complete the piece, and identify the medium and elements of design used in their own work.

We used the time at the end of the day to finish up artwork. I had individual conferences with students to check on their speech progress. We then discussed the next step – doing the research. Students who had completed their artwork used class time to begin researching their issue. Students are asked to continue this work over the weekend and on Monday. They will need resources or devices to research in class on Monday. They should complete all research and the Persuasive Essay Organizer by Tuesday.

We did not get to work on International Day today. Some students still have to research traditional food of Guam and commit to bringing or making a plate of food. Please remember to keep all food nut free. Adam, Cayden, and Carter need to work on the video. Rohan, Justin, and Titus need to work on the brochure. Dancers, please look at getting grass skirts from the Dollar Store.

Grade 6s will begin playing recorder in art class with Ms. Kerr at the beginning of February. Students who have previously ordered and stored recorders at the school will have theirs made available to them on Feb. 1st for the first session. Students who do not have a recorder already in the recorder bin from last year, must bring a recorder to school by Jan. 22nd, or order one through the school.
