Surface Area

Grade 6s attended French class with Mme. Villeneuve and Gym class with Mr. Slyk this morning.

After gym, we worked on our International Day presentation. We still need large pieces of cardboard for our display. Students are also to research traditional food of Guam and commit to bringing or making a plate of food if they haven’t already done so. Please remember to keep all food nut free. All research needs to be given to Cayden by tomorrow.

In math time, we had a practical lesson on finding total surface area of a rectangular prism. We used our Percy Jackson books to model how to find the lengths and widths of the different faces. Students are expected to show detailed steps when solving problems with surface area. We practiced doing this in class and students know to carry on this skills as they complete the practice problems on p. 222 - 223 of the MMS textbook. Look out for math tests coming home today.

Next up was UOI time. We continued working on our own Picasso-style self-portraits. Students had to use cubism in the background of their portraits.

We began working on this year’s persuasive speeches. Grade 6s will compete against each other to participate in the school-wide oral competition on February 25. Please look out for a duo tang coming home today containing a package to guide your child through the process of researching, writing, and presenting the speech. Please review the package with your child and sign the letter at the front of the package. The package must come to school each day as we will be working on speeches every day. Today we read the letter, looked at the schedule, read a sample of persuasive writing, and brainstormed ideas.

We used the last bit of class time as writing time. Students worked independently on adverbs and adjectives.
