Mass

Mme. Villeneuve was supervising a MYP French exam this morning. As a result the Grade 6s did not have French class. We very much appreciated this much needed extra class time. The Grade 6s worked on their UOI art project. They were engaged in a variety of activities such as searching for artists, researching the artist and their style or techniques, and creating a unique art piece of their own. With all this work and preparations for International Day, our classroom is looking busy and messy – all evidence of creative students at work.

Grade 6s attended gym class with Mr. Slyk.

Grade 6s used the time after gym to continue working on our International Day presentation. We discussed dressing island/beach style for International Day. Everyone should bring a change of clothes to change into. Some students have volunteered to bring items for our display as follows:

Bhoovi – table cloth, picnic chair

Gurjas – beach umbrella

Alika – beach mat

We also need some beach toys.

After lunch, we reviewed some concepts from yesterday’s math lesson, such as converting between units before we took up yesterday’s homework.  We then began a new lesson on mass. We explored the units of mass, mg, g, kg, and t as well as the relationships between these units. We discussed how you would convert between these. Everyone is asked to complete the problems on MMS p. 240 & 241 for homework.

After math was speech time. Our school printer was not operational today. Students did not receive a copy of the instructions for the next step in speech writing. We viewed the instructions off our projector instead. I am also including these instructions in today’s blog for students to refer to. Please look at the end of today’s blog. We read and discussed the instructions as a class. Students then wrote the first draft of their first reason paragraph in one sitting. Once this was done they were free to go out for recess and lunch. After lunch, students read their paragraph to a friend and/or a teacher. The goal was to discover if they were persuasive and to receive feedback on how to improve their paragraph. They will repeat this step at home. They will use the advice they received to write a revised draft of this paragraph. We also paid attention to how long paragraphs were to ensure we would be between the 3 – 5 minute time limits for the speech. We are currently aiming for paragraphs that take about 50 s to read at a comfortable speaking pace. The revised draft of reason #1 paragraph is due tomorrow.

Grade 6s will be curling on our very busy Friday this week. Students should come to school in their gym uniforms. They will need a bag for their gym shoes. Look out for permission forms coming home today. These should be returned by Thursday.

1.  Writing the Reason/Supporting Paragraphs

Today we are going to begin building our first argument to support our point of view using convincing language.

Begin building your first argument using your first reason. Decide on sequential transition words. Elaborate on this reason by providing precise facts and details. Use persuasive language. At the end of your paragraph, use a concluding statement that links back to the reason that supports the point of view. Nothing is more persuasive than facts. Use precise facts and details whenever you can. Include your summaries or revise them to support your point of view.

Building your argument in the supporting paragraphs

• Use transition words to begin each paragraph.

Ø  Words to list reasons and show sequence:

ü  First, …, First of all, …, To begin with, …

ü  Second, …, Secondly, …, In addition, …, Next, …, Then, …

ü  Lastly, …, Finally, …, Most of all …

Ø  Words to add information or examples:

ü  For example, …, For instance, …, In order to …

ü  In addition, …, Another, …, Besides, …, Together with, …, Along with, …

ü  Let’s not forget, …, Let’s remember, …, Finally, …

Ø  Words to emphasize a point:

ü  As I just mentioned, …

ü  For this reason, …, In fact, …

ü  Surprisingly, …, Again, …

Ø  Words to summarize a point of view:

ü  Please consider/reconsider …

ü  In conclusion, …

ü  Remember, …

ü  This is important because …

• Elaborate by providing facts and details.

• Write well-developed paragraphs.

• Conclude by linking back to the reason that supports the point of view.

• Check to make sure that your argument is convincing.

• Include effective examples to help your reader picture what you are trying to convey.

• Use transition words for adding information and examples.

• Make sure that you have enough information in your paragraphs to support your reasons.

• Use transition words to emphasize a point.

• Make sure there are no holes in your arguments.

Use the suggestions above to write the first draft of your paragraph on lined paper in pencil. Do this in one sitting. No talking, just write. Imagine that you have only 30 minutes. The clock starts now, GO! All paper must be stored in this duo tang.

After you have written the first draft of your paragraph, read it to a friend, a teacher, and a parent. Ask them if you were convincing. Ask for advice on how you could improve your paragraph. Write notes about the feedback you receive in ink directly on the paper used to write your draft paragraph. Use the suggestions you received to write a revised draft of your reason paragraph.

Use these steps to write all 3 reason paragraphs.

Reason #1 Paragraph and revisions is due Wednesday, January 20

Reason #2 Paragraph and revisions is due Thursday, January 21

Reason #3 Paragraph and revisions is due Friday, January 22
