Abstract Design

Grade 6s attended French class with Mme. Villeneuve and Gym class with Mr. Slyk this morning

We continued working on our International Day presentation. We still need large pieces of cardboard for our display. Some students still have to research traditional food of Guam and commit to bringing or making a plate of food. Please remember to keep all food nut free. Adam and Cayden need to work on the video. Rohan, Justin, and Titus need to work on the brochure. Dancers, please look at getting grass skirts from the Dollar Store.

In today’s math time we reviewed using the formula for volume (base area x height) or (length x width x height). Students made good progress on today’s practice work. They are asked to complete the rest of the problems on MMS p. 226 & 227 for homework.

After math, we continued working on persuasive speeches. Today students let me know the topic for their persuasive speech. They clarified what their position is for their topic and drafted the first version of their speech title. Their task today was to come up with five reasons for their opinion and some supporting examples. They then sorted their reasons into weak and strong reasons. They spoke to a friend in the classroom about why they think their reasons are strong or weak. Not everybody got this far in class. Speech homework is to discuss which reasons and sort them into weak and strong reasons. Final reason choices must be recorded in the topic and reasons organizer.  All this is due tomorrow.

Next up was UOI time. Students began their next art piece – Chromatic Abstraction. They are required to sketch an abstract design that includes vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines. Their design also had to include a square and a triangle. Once the designed was sketched the outlined it in black paint or marker.

Grade 6s will begin playing recorder in art class with Ms. Kerr at the beginning of February. Students who have previously ordered and stored recorders at the school will have theirs made available to them on Feb. 1st for the first session. Students who do not have a recorder already in the recorder bin from last year, must bring a recorder to school by Jan. 22nd, or order one through the school. Order forms are coming home today.

The panoramic picture has been postponed to later in the year.

We kindly ask that families take a look through the lost and found items to see if their child(ren) has/have any belongings in the collection.  Students have also been brought to the lost and found this week to try and locate their missing belongings. Any items left in the lost and found on Friday, January 15th at the end of the school day will be donated to charity.
