Investigating the Properties of Air

I will be away at an IB conference tomorrow. In order to not miss time with my class, I arranged for students to have a double French class tomorrow and to have today’s gym class moved to tomorrow. Thanks to Mme. Stella, Mr. Orr, Mr. Conte, and Ms. Jaskolka who moved their schedules around to allow this to happen. Students had extra time with me today, allowing us to get tomorrow’s inquiry class done today.

In our extended inquiry time, we reviewed the steps in the scientific method and variables. Students then began learning about the properties of air through hands on experiments. At the end of the day we took up each of the experiments, including going over all variables to ensure students understand these. Please look at the video below if you would like more reinforcement on variables. We had many interesting discussions during this time. We went over the expectations for the ‘Properties of Air’ mind map that students will begin working on today. Students also received a ‘Properties of Air’ mind map checklist. Mind maps are due on Monday. Working on the mind map will help students prepare for the properties of air test that takes place on Tuesday, October 29^th.

We continued working on our ‘Before Midnight...’ poems. We reviewed the form of these poems and the success criteria for writing this poem. Students then worked on writing their own poem. Those who completed their work read and gave feedback to a peer and received feedback from a peer. We read another chapter from Roald Dahl’s The Witches. The class is riveted by this spooky book.

We discussed Chapter 18 of The City of Ember during today’s novel study time. There was some time in class to read Chapter 19. Students who did not get this done are to complete the homework and the response for tomorrow.

Grade 6s attended math class today. They wrote the pre-assessment task for their new unit during today’s math time.

November Lunches – Do not order for November 21^st as we will be on a field trip this day.

The lunch site is now open. It will close Wednesday, October 30th at 3:00pm.

Remember, you will have gym class tomorrow and Thursday. Bring your gym uniform on both days.

 

Homework and Reminders

·         Begin working on your ‘Properties of Air’ mind map. Each branch in the mind map should be about a different property. Each sub branch should provide evidence for each property, i.e. include all the experiments we have and will do before the test

·         Complete the Polar Expressions entry form

·         Return the trip form and payment for our trip to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum by Monday, October 28^th –do not order a hot lunch for this day

·         Read Chapter 19 of The City of Ember and complete the response for Wednesday

·         Remember to return Casual Day forms & $ if participating this year by Friday, October 25^th
