Bernoulli's Principle

We had two sessions of inquiry time today. In the morning we completed yesterday’s investigations with paper and moving air. In today’s investigation, students tried to blow a ping pong ball out of a paper funnel and had surprising results. Ask your child to tell you all about this. We concluded that we had a lot more questions than answers from all these investigations.

At the end of the day, we had more inquiry time. Students learned about atmospheric high and low pressure systems, and how air always moves from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. They also learned what Bernoulli’s Principle is. Ask your child to state this principle for you. These two bits of information helped us to explain why we had so many unusual results yesterday and this morning. Students learned that the cross section of a wing has a particular shape called an airfoil and that because of this particular shape, Bernoulli’s Principle can be used to explain why this shape produces lift when air passes over it. This was a lot of information to take in at one time. We will go over all this again tomorrow to ensure everyone is ready for Monday’s test where they will explain Bernoulli’s Principle in relation to an airfoil.

Students used today’s language time to complete their book report on The City of Ember. Many students used first recess time to complete their book report. Those who completed the book report worked on their science fair cars.

We had a second session of language time today. During this time students shared their ‘Before Midnight’ poems with the class in their spookiest voices.

Grade 6s attended French and math class today. In math, students took up the homework on finding the area and perimeter of squares and rectangles. Ms. Joseph introduced the surface area of a rectangular prism. Students are reminded that there must be three variables for any measurement formula for a prism - we use l, w, and h. The surface area of the prism is the sum of the areas of the rectangles.

The surface area of the prism is given by the formula, SA = 2lh + 2 lw + 2 hw. For homework, they are to complete Q 1 a, b &c.

Hot lunch payments are to be made through QuickBooks by November 6th.

Our collection of ‘Lost and Found’ items is piling up. Please make some time to come into the school building and a look through the lost and found items. These are now located in the GYM. On November 8th at 4pm all left over items will be donated to the local Salvation Army.

Please send in newspapers if you have any. We need these for a Papier-mâché project we will be working on during this unit.

Curling permission forms and waivers are due tomorrow, Friday, November 1st.

A number of students have not completed their Polar Expression entry forms. These are past due. Please submit these ASAP.

A number of parents have expressed an interest in attending the trip to the Canadian Warplane museum. We already have enough parent volunteers, but I understand the increased interest as it is a lovely place to visit. Parents who would like, may attend if they are willing to pay the entry fee once we arrive at the museum. You are still required to have a vulnerable sector check on file in order to travel and be with students while on the trip. I believe there will be sufficient space on the bus for parents to travel with us. Let me know if this is something you would like to do.
