Day 5 – Human Development Index

Grade 6s wrote the decimals unit test in math class today.

Many students are still working on their story entry for the Polar Expressions writing contest. Students who have completed their draft and good copy are working on their science fair projects in class.

Students who have not completed their video commercial promoting the PEPS of one of Canada’s provinces or territories used their gym time to try get caught up with their work. We are planning to watch the videos in class tomorrow. Students work will be assessed at this time. The class will be writing a test on concepts covered so far in the Canada in the World unit. The test will take place on Monday, November 20th. Students are reminded that studying/preparing for a test includes all of the following 5 steps. 1. Read the material at least 3 times. 2. Make notes without looking then check to see what was missed. 3. Draw pictures or mind maps as you study. 4. Explain the work to someone else 5. Have someone quiz you on the work in your Duo-tang.

We began exploring the Human Development Index in class today. Ask your child to explain this to you. Ask them what three factors are considered when determining a country’s HDI. Students looked at a map that shows countries by their HDI. They discussed the patterns in locations of countries with high and low HDI. The compared the features of countries with high and low HDIs. Finally, at the end of class, we discussed the ‘Global Village’ Ask your child to explain to tell you about this.

For our Canada in the World Art Project, students need to find an image of a Canadian landscape to paint on canvas. Students finalise an image for this project. The image must be a photograph (can be online) of an aspect of a Canadian region. This image is needed for tomorrow’s class. Students also need an old t-shirt or art smock for Wednesday onwards.

The class attended French, gym, and music class today.
