Day 1 – Constructing Graphs and Base Coats

We continued working on Data Management in math class today. Students collected data from each other on their hand spans. They used this data to construct a bar graph. We discussed how much of the grid paper to use, how to select an appropriate scale, and to add all elements, e.g. titles, labels, units, etc. Students then worked on practice work where they constructed bar and line graphs.  Students are asked to complete p. 72 - 73 of the MMS 6 practice and homework books if they did not get done in class.

Students who are behind on their story entry for the Polar Expressions writing contest used today’s recess time to get caught up. Also in language, we reviewed the criteria for writing a good fable. Students will be writing their fable tomorrow.

The class will be writing a test on concepts covered so far in the Canada in the World unit of inquiry. The test will take place on Monday, November 20th. Today students checked their Duo-tangs to ensure there is no missing work. They also received a review sheet to help them prepare for the test. Students are reminded that studying/preparing for a test includes all of the following 5 steps. 1. Read the material at least 3 times. 2. Make notes without looking then check to see what was missed. 3. Draw pictures or mind maps as you study. 4. Explain the work to someone else 5. Have someone quiz you on the work in your Duo-tang.

For their next UOI project, students are producing an informational brochure about a developing country with a low HDI. We finalised the countries to be covered as follows:

Today students prepared for this investigation by recording what they think they already know and what they would like to learn about their chosen country. Students read about how to be a critical reader as they conduct their research and how to acknowledge their sources. Students will need programs to create a trifold brochure (e.g. Microsoft Publisher or Google Docs) next week.

For our Canada in the World Art Project, students continued work on their landscape. Today they painted the background coat of their landscape. They will continue painting tomorrow.

We began working on our Christmas Concert performance today.

Students attended gym and music class today.

I will be away tomorrow. Students know what to do in class tomorrow. Please remember that we are curling on Monday. Students should come dressed in their gym uniform. They need a bag for their gym shoes. They need gloves, hats, and a warm comfortable sweater or coat for our trip.
