Day 6 – Hot Air Balloon Art

We began our week with a very messy art project. Students explored form – an element of design that is 3-dimensional and encompasses volume as they began constructing a model of a hot air balloon using papier mache. Fine motor skills were needed as students placed the strips of newspaper neatly on the balloon. Many students had balloons that were trying to escape the transformation.

During our Flight inquiry time, students partnered up with a buddy and conducted a peer assessment of the Properties of Air mind maps. These are going home today. Students should use them as a tool to study for the properties of air test that takes place tomorrow.

We continued working on our inquiry into flight. We watched a video and read about the physics behind what makes a hot air balloon work. Later in the day we learned how lift must overcome gravity for flight to occur.

In math, we modeled adding fractions using fractions strips, circles, and number lines. Most students prefer writing equivalent fractions with the same denominator and then adding the numerators. Grade 6s are asked to complete pages 70, and 74 – 77 of the MMS 7 practice book if they did not get done in class.

Students attended French and gym class today. While at gym students participated in the Jump Rope for Heart event.

A message from Ms. Carter:

  1. Becoming a balloon artist is not as easy as it sounds, it is actually very challenging and it requires a lot of training and some level of education (this is not the type of education that you are thinking of).
