Energy Transformations

During today’s inquiry time, students examined household appliances. Their learning goal was to understand the law of conservation of energy by observing how energy is transformed from one form to another form. At each appliance station, they turned the appliance on, made observations about energy transformations and recorded their observations.

The class then watched a tutorial about mind mapping. Mind mapping is a thinking tool that can be used to organise your thoughts, solidify your understanding, and used as a tool to study for tests and exams.

Some of the tips for mind mapping from the video are:

·         Create a central idea – use an image

·         Add thoughts and ideas – use curved lines, use thicker branches for more important ideas

·         Use colour

·         Add one key word to describe your branches

·         Add images to your branches

·         Add connections to 2nd and 3rd level branches

Students have been asked to create a mind map of what they have learned about the characteristics of electricity. They began working on this in class today. The final version of the mind map is due on Monday, September 17th. Students will be bringing their mind maps home today and tomorrow to continue working on them. Students are reminded to need to bring in $15 for their supplies and a shoe box to store their cars by Monday, September 17th.

In language we continued learning about similes as literary devices. Students finished up writing their own similes. Some students shared their similes with the class. We discussed the idiom ‘a penny for your thoughts’. Ask your child to tell you what this means.

Grade 6s attended math, music, and French class today.

In Math, Grade 6s practiced recording data. Students created a tally table representing the number of letters in each word for different levels of texts. They created a bar graph for the same. Ms. Joseph has assigned math homework out of the MMS 7 textbook, P. 176 Q. 1. They also need to complete the survey.

Look out for forms about a golfing trip coming home today. Forms need to be returned by October 1st.

Tomorrow is the last day to hand in BBQ orders and payment.
