Year Ahead Day

Day 4

My Grade 6s headed off to Grade 7 for the day. They were super excited when they left, were very happy when I saw them half way through the day, and raving about an awesome day in Grade 7 at the end of the day.

The Grade 5s got to be Grade 6s for a day. We started the day talking about how Grade 6 is different to Grade 5. Students had a clear picture of what Grade 6s is like. Their ideas included more work, harder work, lots of projects, and the Exhibition.

The ‘Grade 6s for a Day’ then began working. They did math work first. The learned how to calculate the surface area and volume of a rectangular prism while clearly showing their calculations in an organised way. Next they were challenged to use toothpicks and plasticine to build a skeleton of a decagonal prism. They were faced with the problem of figuring out what a decagon was, which they did and then they were on their way. It took a few tries before someone came up with a solution to the problem and this helped everyone along.

We did a bit of language work next. We discussed why Mr. Sawatsky requires Grade 5 and 6 students to learn persuasive writing and speaking. The class came up with excellent ideas. Ask your child to share these ideas with you. Everyone was asked to decide if they were for or against homework. In groups, they came up with reasons for their opinion. At the end of the day, students used their ideas to participate in a class debate. We had an excellent argument, and it was interesting to hear the different perspectives on this issue.

The ‘Grade 6s for a Day’ attended music, gym, and French class today.

It was nice getting to know the Grade 5s. I hope you had a good time in Grade 6.
