The Cubic Metre

Day 2

Grade 6s had a fun transition back to school after the weekend by attending music class with Mr. Oliver. Mr. Oliver has asked that students take instruments home at least once a week to practice their playing.

We began our day with math. We began today’s lesson by developing an understanding of a cubic metre. We achieved this by building a to-scale skeleton frame of a cubic metre. This gave us an excellent frame of reference when we consider how big a cubic metre is. We examined a cubic centimetre and considered how many it would take to fill a cubic metre. We used calculations to help us do this. First we backed up a bit and learned that 1 m2 = 10 000 cm2, then we learned (through calculations) that 1 m3 = 1 000 000 cm3. Ask your child to show you the calculations we used. Students used this information to covert m2 to cm2, and m3 to cm3. Finally, we took up last week Friday’s homework, on volume and Thursday’s work on surface area. This took a lot of class time and we ended up using 15 minutes of recess time to complete this work. Students are asked to complete practice problems on p. 230 - 231 of the MMS textbook.

Next up was time to work on our flight inquiry project. Today was the last day allocated to testing paper air planes. Students did this outside. Now that everyone has their data, they should create an appropriate graph using software of their choosing. Please email me the graph or print it out and bring it to school tomorrow.  Students continue to need their devices for the data management portion of this project.

In addition to music, Grade 6s also attended French and gym class today.

We ended the day talking about this year’s speech contest. Students have received a speech package to guide them through the steps of writing and reciting a persuasive speech. This package is coming home today and must be returned to school each day. Please take time to review the package with your child tonight. Students should begin thinking of possible topic ideas. Please sign the letter at the front of the package to acknowledge that your child has discussed the speech with you.

Our class will be hosting the monthly bake sale this week Tuesday and Wednesday. Students are asked to contribute items to sell at the bake sale. These may be bought or home baked but must be peanut and nut free. Thank you in advance for your contributions.

Forms and payments for our trip to the Canadian Heritage Warplane Museum are now past due.

Year Ahead Day

SJA is excited to announce that Year Ahead Day is happening again this year! All SJA PYP students will be participating in this exciting event on Wednesday, January 25th.  Year Ahead Day is a fun and interactive day for the students at SJA to spend a day in the class of the grade level ahead of them (example: SK students spend their day as Grade 1 students, Grade 6 students spend their day as Grade 7 students, etc.). This is a great way for the students at SJA to get a glimpse into their future life at SJA! Students can get to know the teachers, see their future classroom, and take part in activities they will be participating in next year. Please know that the teacher that is assigned for your child for Year Ahead Day may not necessarily be your child's classroom teacher next year.
