Time Zones

Day 4

It was wonderful to see everyone at school today and to hear about how students had spent their Christmas Break. We had a productive day even though it was our first day back. Grade 6s began their day attending music class with Mr. Oliver.

Once back in our room we discussed International Day. This is an annual event at SJA. It takes place on Friday, January 20th in the afternoon. Families and friends of our students are invited to attend this event. The Grade 6 class has chosen to represent Spain. Today the class generated a list of possible topics to research and represent about Spain. They also came up with a list of ideas that they may use to present their research. Students have formed groups and have chosen topics. They will begin their research tomorrow and therefore need to bring their devices to school.

Students then attended gym class with Mr. O.

We began a new math unit on measurement after recess and lunch. In today`s lesson, students learned about the different time zones in Canada. It is important for students to review the location of Canada`s provinces and territories if they are unsure of them to successfully complete problems relating to time zones. Students examined winter and summer time zone maps to observe differences. They calculated the time differences between the zones. They practiced describing different locations using the terms ‘ahead’ and ‘behind’. Students are asked to complete practice problems on p. 208 of the MMS textbook. Look out for Data Management unit tests coming home today. Please take time to review, sign, and return these tests.

Next up, the class had French with Mme. Stella.

We ended the day with our flight unit. Today we focused on our last line of inquiry for this unit: societal and environmental impacts of flying devices that make use of the properties of air. Students considered topics that this statement could be referring to. They brainstormed and discussed their ideas. They then paired up with a partner and chose a topic that relates to this line of inquiry that they would like to learn more about. Students need their devices tomorrow to work on researching their topic.

Look out for a trip letter coming home today.

Some students were missing uniform pieces today. Remember to bring these pieces to school tomorrow.

One of the students in our class is missing a blazer. Please check at home in case you took it by mistake.
