Rounding & Comparing Decimals

Day 10

We began the day with math. We took up yesterday’s homework and then worked on today’s lesson which was about ordering and comparing decimals. This was a pretty easy lesson. Students already use place-value comparison to compare numbers and to determine which number is larger, except this is now extended into the tenths, hundredths, and thousandths range. Everyone completed and corrected practice questions 5, 6, and 7 in class. Students are asked to complete the remaining practice questions on p. 123 -124 of the MMS textbook as homework.

We had language time today where we learned about alliteration and onomatopoeia. Ask your child to describe these literary devices to you. Students are asked to complete the language work on p. 92.

Students continued their research of Canada’s exports during UOI time. Seven groups have completed their research and are now working on their storyboards. Devices are needed every day this week. Students need a YouTube account to upload their video once it is done.

UOI tests are coming home today. The class received a lecture from me as many students did very poorly on the map work, despite my warning them that there is a map on the test and they need to know all provinces and territories as well as all capital cities and the bodies of water I specified. The tests I set are meant to prepare them for the exams they will write in grade 7. They are developing their study skills and habits of mind. A large number of students are writing a retest on Monday which means they will have to study over the weekend. Please review the test with your child, sign it, and return it to school tomorrow.

Grade 6s attended French and music class today.

We had debate club during second recess today. It was a challenging topic: Trump for President. Some students had to argue from the point of view of something they strongly disagreed with. It was a challenging task but the debaters were great at arguing from a perspective different from their own.

We had novel study time. Students discussed chapter 5 in their literature circle groups. Everyone was assigned a new role and received class time to read chapter 6. We will have novel study time again tomorrow. Everyone should complete their chapter 6 reading and response for homework if they did not get done in class.
