Estimating Sums & Differences & Haikus

Day 2

We began the day with math. We took up Friday’s homework on rounding decimals and then worked on today’s lesson which was about estimating sums and differences.  For sums, we did this by rounding both addends to the nearest whole number, rounding only one addend to the nearest whole number, rounding both addends to the nearest tenth place, and rounding both addends to the nearest hundredth place. For differences we estimated by rounding only the subtrahend to the nearest whole place, rounding both numbers to the nearest tenth place, and rounding both to the nearest hundredth place.  Students are asked to complete the practice questions on p. 130 -131 of the MMS textbook. For questions 1 & 2 please estimate as follows:

1. a) – d) to the nearest whole number

     e) – g) round only one addend to the nearest whole

     h) – j) round both addends to the nearest tenth

2. a) – b) round both to the nearest whole

    c) – d) round both to the nearest tenth place

    e) – f) round both to the nearest hundredth

Students continued working on their Canada’s exports during UOI time. Students were challenged to complete their storyboards today. Five groups are currently working on their video. Devices are needed until groups present their video to the class. Students need a YouTube account to upload their video once it is done.

Students that needed to used today’s first recess time to write their UOI retest.

The class attended music class with Mr. Andrei and French class with Mme. Stella today.

After recess, we had novel study time. Students discussed chapter 7 in their literature circle groups. Everyone was assigned a new role and received class time to read chapter 8. We will have novel study time again on Tuesday. Everyone should complete their chapter 8 reading and response for homework if they did not get done in class.

We ended the day with language time. Students read and learned about the format of a Haiku poem. Students were challenged to write the first and second draft of their own Haiku poem. Tomorrow they will be asked to choose between their action-word poem and their Haiku as their submission for the Polar Expressions Poetry Competition. Students then began working on their entry form which required them to write ‘About the Author’ in the third person. We discussed what it means to write in the third person.

Look out for more after-care statements coming home with some students today.

Look out for a letter and permission form about this month’s curling trips coming home today.

Look out for a letter about an after-school skating program beginning soon.
