Dominating Decimals

Day 9

Our day began with novel study. Student’s met in their groups to discuss chapter 15. Because we missed yesterday’s novel study time, students are asked to read chapters 16 – 18 over the weekend and complete their response. We will have novel study time on Monday.

We had math next. We took up yesterday’s homework on multiplying by 0.01, 0.01, and 0.001. We then did a new lesson on multiplying a decimal by a 1-digit whole number. Our strategy was to multiply as we usually do while ignoring the decimal. Then we estimate the product by rounding to have only whole numbers. The estimation is used to help us accurately place the decimal point. Students made great progress with the practice work in class. Students are asked to complete practice work on p. 149 - 150 of the MMS textbook.

We used first recess to work on our science fair projects. Any projects that are not complete are coming home today. With curling happening next week, we will not have more recess time to work on the cars. Students are asked to finish up at home over the weekend. I will still be available to help anyone that needs support on Monday to Wednesday next week.

Second recess was used for debate club where the topic was ‘private schools’. It has been wonderful seeing students look at an issue from different perspectives and thinking critically. Our last debate club meeting takes place next week. The topic is ‘the internet’.

During UOI time, students wrote a test on Canada’s trading partners and map work. The remaining UOI time was used to work on the Canada’s trading partners brochure. I gave the class a quick tutorial on how to use the trifold brochure template in Microsoft Publisher. For those that do not have Microsoft, we looked at how to use Google Docs to create a brochure. Students then used remaining class time to type up their research. Brochures are due Monday. Students who have a colour printer at home are encouraged to print their brochures out at home. Students who do not have a printer a home should email their brochure to me. I will print it out at school in black and white.

I am still waiting on some groups to send me their Canada’s exports video. Students that have uploaded their video to YouTube should email me the link at mhaag@stjudesacademy.com.

We are curling on Monday. There are a number of students who have not yet returned their curling forms. Students who do not return the form will not be able to attend the trip. Please remember the form for Monday. All students should come dressed in their gym uniform on Monday. Bring your SJA house hoodie or gym sweater if you have one. Bring a hat and gloves. Gym shoes must be taken in a bag.

Students attended gym and French class today.
