Day 3 – Ms. Hayward’s Workshop on Academic Honesty & MLA Citation

Thank you to parents for a tremendous turnout at last night’s conferences.

We began our day with math. Today we learned how to find the volume of triangular prisms, using the formula Volume = Base Area x Height. This involved two steps, as students had to first find the Base Area of the triangle using the formula Base Area = (b x h) ÷ 2. Students are asked to complete MMS 6 p. 142 - 143 if they did not get done in class today. The unit test will be written on Thursday, April 12.

We continued working on exhibition for the remainder of the day. Today we reviewed the process and expectations concerning the group essay. Students have received a package that guides them through the process. We have agreed that the essay organiser is due on Tuesday, April 10th. Our focus is still securing the primary source site visit and/or interview. Students need to finalise their interview questions and have these approved by teachers, mentors, and/or parents. The discrimination group conducted yet another interview today and have another interview scheduled for Monday. Another priority remains the action ideas and planning, and to keep researching to answer all concept questions and address all lines of inquiry.

Today, Ms. Hayward visited the class and presented a workshop on academic honesty and citations. She helped the class understand the need for citations, intellectual property, copyright, plagiarism, collusion. Students were shown the academic honesty statement they will be required to sign once they have completed the essay. Ms. Haward explained how to correctly use MLA formatting when citing different types of sources such as magazines, informational books, websites, Neflix, etc. Students then participated in activity stations where they got to practice their citation skills. Thank you, Ms. Hayward.
