Day 5 – Vikings

The Grade 6 class has continued working well again today.

First up was math. We reviewed how to calculate the volume of rectangular prisms using the formula V = lwh or V = Ah. Students also drew isometric and pictorial diagrams of 3-D figures. Students who did not complete the practice work in class need to complete pages 49 – 51 and 61 – 63 of the MMS 7 workbooks for Monday. The unit test will be written on Thursday, January 18th.

We continued working on persuasive writing as part of this term’s OWA. Students read more samples of persuasive writing, discussed the strengths of the samples, and shared their ideas with the class. We continued creating a class chart of what it takes to create a phenomenal piece of persuasive writing. I have now completed all conferences with students to discuss their individual areas of strengths and weakness in persuasive writing. Students will be writing their Term 2 post assessment Ontario Writing Assessment (OWA) on Monday on a secret topic.

We continued working on persuasive speeches. Students were asked consider the 5 reasons for their opinion and select the three that were the strongest in supporting their opinion. Students discussed their ideas in their groups. They should also discuss their ideas with their families this weekend. They recorded their choices in their Topic & Reasons Organiser. Students who did not complete this in class need to complete this for homework today. As a class we brainstormed persuasive words that can be used in the speech writing. Students may begin researching for their speeches and recording their notes in their organiser. The deadline for the research to be completed is January 16th.

At the end of the day we worked on our explorers unit. Students heard a theory that Viking explorers discovered the American continent before Columbus. Students will be writing a unit test on Monday, January 22nd.

Permission forms for our winter skiing/snowboarding trips have gone home. These must be fully completed and returned by Monday, January 15th.

Students attended French, gym, and music class today.
