Day 4 – Speeches: Reasons and Examples

We had a very productive day in Grade 6 today.

First up was math. We reviewed how to calculate the surface area of a rectangular prism. Then we learned a quicker formula that can be used to calculate surface area (SA = 2lh + 2lw + 2hw). Students also drew top, front, and side views of 3-D figures. Students who did not complete the practice work in class need to complete pages 46 – 48 and 58 – 60 of the MMS 7 workbooks for tomorrow. The unit test will be written on Thursday, January 18th.

We continued working on persuasive writing as part of this term’s OWA. Students read more samples of persuasive writing, discussed the strengths of the samples, and shared their ideas with the class. We continued creating a class chart of what it takes to create a phenomenal piece of persuasive writing. I began conferencing with students to discuss their individual areas of strengths and weakness in persuasive writing. Students will be writing their Term 2 post assessment Ontario Writing Assessment (OWA) on Monday on a secret topic.

We continued working on persuasive speeches. Students were asked to generate 5 reasons for their opinion on their chosen speech topic. They are also working on generating examples to support each of the 5 reasons they came up with today. Students who did not complete this in class need to complete this for homework today.

At the end of the day we worked on our explorers unit by considering `who were the first explorers that discovered the American continent?’ Now that students agree that it wasn`t Columbus, they were asked who came after American First Peoples. Some students were surprised at what they learned. Ask your child to share this learning with you today. Students will be writing a unit test on Monday, January 22nd. Students also began working on a timeline project that shows some early explorers.

Permission forms for our winter skiing/snowboarding trips have gone home. These must be fully completed and returned by Monday, January 15th.

Students attended French and gym class today.
