Areas of Parallelograms and Triangles

We began our day by working on math. We took up yesterday’s homework on the area of parallelograms. We then began learning about the areas of triangles. To help students understand the formula for the area of a triangle, they used two congruent triangles to create a parallelogram. Then they found the area of the parallelogram using the formula A = b X h. Students were asked to mentally find the area of one of the triangles. Students quickly realised that the area of one of the triangles was half of the area of the parallelogram.  This realization helped them to formulate the area of a triangle as Area = (b X h) ÷ 2. Students were reminded that the height line may be drawn inside the triangle so that it extends at a right angle from the base to an opposite vertex, or it may be one of the triangle sides that is at a right angle to the base.  The class had some time to work on practice problems. They are asked to complete problems on p. 360 & 361 of the MMS textbook.
We used the rest of class time to work on this terms writing assessment. The text form for this term is a narrative. Students wrote a fable or legend that explained how an animal got special or unique features. We examined the rubric as a class to ensure that everyone understood the criteria for this task. Many students used second recess & cafeteria time to complete this task.
Students who finished this task prepared their part of a class video for next year’s Grade 6s. The class decided that instead of writing letters of advice about Exhibition to the Grade 6s of 2016/2017, they would like to produce a video instead.
Students who finished their video worked on their math practice work.
Grade 6s attended Gym and French class today.
Spelling bee finalists, please keep practicing your spelling bee words and more for next week’s spelling contest.
I am still waiting on a couple of students to send me their PowerPoint. Please send them ASAP as we would like to work on digital portfolios tomorrow.
Some students are coming home with uniform violation forms. Please look out for these today.
We have begun uniform checks again! These will happen every now and again to ensure that all SJA students are wearing proper uniform. Uniform pieces must be bought through Alpa and Multiform Canada. Uniform violations will be sent home if a student is not wearing the proper piece of clothing! First violation: a warning to parents. Second violation: the office will notify a parent and the correct uniform piece must be brought to the school the same day.  Third violation: uniform piece will be sent home at parent’s expense. Fourth violation: community service hours will be assigned. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
Bring devices for tomorrow as we will be working on digital portfolios.
