Exhibition: More Research

We began our day with math. Today’s lesson was about adding fractions. Students did this by drawing pictures and writing fraction addition sentences. When they were adding fractions that did not have the same denominator, students first changed the fractions to an equivalent fraction that has the same denominator as the fraction it is being added to. Students are required to show their work and convert improper fractions to mixed numbers in their simplest form.  We made excellent progress with the practice work in class. Everybody’s Q 1 – 3 has been completed, checked, and corrected. Students are to complete the remaining problems on p. 302 & 303 of the MMS textbook for homework. A number of students have completed all the practice work in class. Well done!

The remainder of our day was spent on Exhibition. I met with groups to check on the research work they did yesterday. I made sure that students had used the checklist they received as a self-assessment. I used the same tool to assess their work. Students now know if their research work is meeting expectations. They have been given feedback on improvements that need to be made. Students were given another “Research & Note-Taking Checklist” to help self-assess their work today. They were again challenged to use their class time to complete a minimum of 3 full hand-written pages of jot notes for their topic, using reliable sources. They will be graded on their research notes. Students should not begin work on any other component of Exhibition (except planning the Action component) until the research and essay are done. The research forms the foundation for all other components and needs to be completed thoroughly. Grade 6s are asked to find additional sources such as books, journals, and magazines for additional research. They should bring these to school on Monday. We worked through gym, and second recess and lunch today. Students are asked to complete any research work that did not get finished up in class. Students have received the deadline dates for the research and essay.

Some groups also met with their mentors today.

We ended the day by attending a whole-school assembly where Calvin was recognised as being an open-minded student and Gurjas as a caring student. Well done Calvin and Gurjas.

Look out for a Summer Fiesta letter and flyer coming home today. Also look out for an Eco-Kids letter coming home today, especially if you have been looking for a safe way to dispose of your old batteries.
