Thumbnail Sketches and Equations

Our day started with math. We used class time before recess to take up yesterday’s homework on patterns in division. After recess we completed a lesson on solving equations. Ask your child to explain what an equation is. We practiced solving a few equations as a class and students grasped this concept pretty quickly. Many students completed all the practice work before the class time was up. Students who did not get done in class are asked to complete practice problems on p. 18 of the MMS textbook for homework.

Grade 6s were very excited about UOI time today. Their challenge was to complete 3 thumbnail sketches of 3 different ideas they have for building electric cars. Many students took time to view the videos we watched in class yesterday to help them solve problems they are encountering in their sketches. Some hiccups that many students need to problem solve is how to attach the axle to the chassis in a way that allows the axle to still move. Another problem is how to build a switch from easily available materials such as thumbtacks, brass fasteners, and paperclips.

Some students have finished their thumbnail sketches and have chosen the one they want to build. These students began working on their preconstruction sketch. These students should collect and bring in materials they need to build their cars. Students who did not complete their thumbnail sketches are asked to do this for homework. They should also pick one car they like to build, and be ready to discuss their ideas with me tomorrow.

Grade 6s attended Art and Gym class this morning.
