Portuguese and Spanish Explorers

We continued working on speeches today. I met with each student and checked that they recorded 3- 5 examples for reason # 1 in their chart. Some students had to improve this work if their examples were too general, repetitive, or weak.  We continued to focus on researching to find out if the reasons students have generated for their opinion are true and factual. Students are to find examples and evidences that support their reasons. Today’s goal was to record 3 – 5 jot-notes in the organizer that support the second reason as well as summarize their research. Any incomplete work is to be done as homework. Parents, please look at this organizer and give your child feedback on their ideas. Students may change/improve their information based on their discussions with parents.
Next, we continued working on our Where we are in place and time inquiry unit. We began our time by taking up yesterday’s homework on the Age of Exploration. Today students learned about Henry the Navigator’s school for mariners, Bartholomew’s Diaz’s rounding of the tip of Africa, and Vasco da Gama’s reaching India by sailing around Africa. They also learned how Christopher Columbus was Italian but sailed for Spain. They completed map work activities where they calculated the distances Columbus traveled to the Americas. We will take up this work tomorrow. For homework, students are to add Bartholomew Diaz, Vasco da Gama, and Christopher Columbus to their timelines. We used the last bit of inquiry time to work on our Viking art projects.

The inquiry unit test has been postponed and will be written on Tuesday, January 21st. Students should study all work including Aboriginal perspectives on who first founded America, scientific theories such as the Beringia Land Bridge theory, Map work (continents and oceans), all explorers (Asians, Polynesians, Irish, Vikings, Portuguese, Spanish, and more), events leading up to the Age of exploration (1095 & 1453 AD/CE), Reasons for European exploration, and technological advances that allowed for successful exploration.
Students attended French class with Mme. Stella and math class with Ms. Joseph. In math students took up yesterday’s homework on applications of mean, median and mode. They then worked on misleading graphs. Students discussed various misleading graphs and described ways to create a misleading graph. For homework, students are to complete Q. 4 on P. 205. The unit test has been postponed to Monday, January 20th.
