Asians, Polynesians, Irish, Vikings. Who disocvered America?

Day 6

We began our day with math. We took up yesterday’s work on symmetry. We then did a new lesson on rotational symmetry. Students received wax paper to help them complete their work. Students are asked to complete practice questions on p. 272 - 273 of the MMS textbook. We are hoping to write the unit test for Transformational Geometry on Thursday, February 16th. If we do not complete the work and review on time, we will write the test on Tuesday, February 21st instead.

During inquiry time students learned about several people groups that have either oral or written histories that show that they may have been one of the first peoples on the American continent. To begin today’s lesson, we considered why people may have been explorers. This is important to consider as causation is one of our key concepts for this unit. When we discussed the Asians, Polynesians, Irish, and Vikings, we considered what their motivation was. We discussed how these are theories, and evidence is needed to prove them to be true. We learned about the Vikings in more detail. Ask your child to explain what they learned to you.

We had a little bit of time for speeches at the end of the day. I used this time to check on students who needed to catch up. Students who are on track used class time to record their speech onto cue cards. Students will use the cue cards as they work on memorising their speech. Cue cards must be completed for Monday.

Students attended music, French, and gym class today.

A few students have not yet returned their City of Ember books. Please do this as soon as possible.

Look out for after-care invoices coming home with some students today.

We will have novel study on Monday. Please remember your novels and Duo-Tangs.

Remember to complete your Powtoon project this weekend.

The ordering system for hot lunches is now open for March. Parents can log in with their created emails and passwords and order for the month. The final date for ordering is Feb. 24th at 4:00pm. All lunch payments must be received by Feb 27th in order for their orders to be processed. Please address any questions to Mrs. Smith, bsmith@stjudescademy.com
