Prime and Composite Numbers

Day 6

In math we continued working on whole numbers. We took up yesterday’s homework. We then began our next lesson on composite and prime numbers. We reviewed the terms ‘factors’ and ‘products’. We discussed using an organised list to find all the factors for a number, e.g. 16. We did this for each factor of 16 and noticed that some numbers have only two factors (one and themselves) while other numbers have more factors. Students used this observation to define composite and prime numbers. Ask your child to explain these terms to you. Also, ask them if 1 is a prime number. The class had 15 minutes of class time to begin today’s practice work. Students are asked to complete Questions 1, 2, 4, 5, & 7 – 10 on p. 46 – 47 of the MMS textbook.

We began our UOI time by being an audience to Avneet’s presentation on what it means to be independent. Avneet presented scenarios and asked her classmates to say whether the scenarios demonstrated examples of independence. Thank you, Avneet!

We spent today’s UOI time working on note-taking skills. Students viewed videos about electric circuits and recorded notes describing electricity, circuits, electrons, batteries, short circuits, and more. We heard that 1 amp represents the number of electrons moving past one point in a circuit. This was a very big whole number, bigger than the periods we have learned about in class. We used the internet to learn which periods are greater than a trillion. Ask your child to tell you what the two periods are that we learned about today were called. We then practiced saying this big number as a class. In order to understand the videos we were watching, we had to pause and talk about matter, atoms, and the periodic table of the elements.

At the end of the day, we continued working on creating a cover page for our IB portfolios.

Students who were not working on the reading assessments today attended Gym, French, and Music class today.
