Surface Area of Rectangular Prisms

Today in math, we worked on estimating and calculating the surface area of a rectangular prism. Students first worked with boxes to measure the length and width of each face. They then calculated area. They worked out total surface area by adding up the areas of the 6 individual faces.  Students tried these skills on practice questions. They are asked to complete p. 222 & 223 in their math text book. Students who wrote the Data Management retest are bringing their retests home today. Please take time to review the test with your child.

We began working on our novel study for this term. We are reading Copper Sunrise by Bryan Buchan. This book links to our explorers inquiry unit. Students were given time to read chapter 1 in class. They were each assigned a role to use to reflect on their reading. They will share and discuss their reflections when they meet in groups tomorrow.

In our explorers inquiry unit time, students continued working on their research project they will be working on for the next few days. Students are discovering that they need to do a lot of reading to find the information they are looking for.

Ms. Lovan was away today. We used gym time to work on speeches. I met with students to check on their speech progress. A general shortcoming that surfaced today is that students are writing personal opinions for their reason. They are challenged to find what experts in the field have to say about their topic. They will need to cite the expert and their evidence that supports their reason. Students are asked to improve on their research and write a first draft of reason 1 paragraph by tomorrow.

Grade 6s attended Drama and French class today.
