First Nation Legends/Stories

Dear SJA Families,

We are very excited for our annual Junior Kindergarten to Grade 2 Christmas Concert. See below for more details.
On December 10, 2019, students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 2 will put on two performances at the St. Jude’s Dome. Our afternoon performance will begin at 1:00 pm, with doors opening at 12:30. Our evening performance will begin at 6:30 pm, with doors opening at 6:15 pm. Seating is on a first come first serve basis. Please keep in mind that outside food and drinks are not permitted in the Dome.
For our evening performance, families are welcome to take our shuttle from St. Jude’s to the Dome and back. Shuttles will begin running from 6:00-7:00 pm.
We encourage all families to come bundled up to stay warm and cozy for the entire show. The students and teachers have put a tremendous amount of work into their performances and kindly ask that all families stay and enjoy the show until the end.
We look forward to seeing you all there!

There are two weeks left of school before the break and we have a lot to get through.

We began our day taking up some of the inquiry work that students completed as homework last week. The first was the Beringia Land Bridge theory. We discussed this theory, making sure students understood it. We took up the fill-in-the-blanks page they completed. The second work we took up was the comparison chart of indigenous peoples depending on their location in Canada.

Next, we had novel study time. We took up discussion questions about Chapters 9 & 10 as a class. Students had some time to work on today’s reading and homework. They err to read Chapters 11 & 12 and complete pages 37 & 38 in the guide. This work is due tomorrow.

Students who were away last Friday used their recess time to work on their DRA and their Haida art.

Later in the day we had more inquiry time. During this time we read two First Nation stories called Why Mouse is so Small and Two-Finned Whale. Students learned about the characteristics of some First Nations stories and discussed the lessons that could be learned from these stories. For homework, students are to read and reflect on the final story Legend of the Dreamcatcher. They are to complete the last section of the legend chart for this story, adding the following information about Legend of Dreamcatcher: Title/author, First Nation, List of Characteristics of the Legend/Story, and What Lesson does the Legend/Story Teach? This is due tomorrow.

Devices are needed for tomorrow’s inquiry lesson.

Students attended French, Phys. Ed, and math class. In math, they took up the review package with Ms. Joseph. They unit test will be written tomorrow, Tuesday, November 10th.

We will be walking to the dome tomorrow to attend the JK – 2 Christmas concert performance which begins at 1 pm. The performance lasts about 1 hour. Please dress accordingly.
