Decimals

We began working on our new decimal math unit this morning. We reviewed how to use a place-value chart to show large numbers in the millions and billions. We also reviewed representing fractions using pictures and decimals. Students should be very confident with equivalences such as 1/2 = 0.5, 1/4 = 0.25, 3/4 = 0.75, 9/10 = 0.9, 9/100 = 0.09, 3/10 = 0.3, 3/100 = 0.03, etc. Students practiced rounding large numbers to the nearest tenth and hundredth place. They also converted between standard form, mixed numbers and decimals. We did not have much time to complete today's practice questions in class. Students are asked to complete these questions for homework.

We were then joined by the Grade 5s for inquiry time. Students worked in groups to finish up writing the constitution for their island government.

Grade 6s then met for novel study discussions. Students had class time to complete the reading of chapter 17,but did not have enough time to answer the questions related to this chapter. Students are asked to complete these questions for homework.

We finally had class time to work on science fair projects. I met with each student to check on their progress and advise them of next steps. Students who are behind are strongly encouraged to come to school early each day to work on their projects from 8 am to 8:45 am daily. Students are also asked to make time to purchase the trifold display board.

Grade 6s attended French class with Mme. Blanco.

The Grade 5s joined us again at the end of the day. Groups were challenged to complete the write up of services that the government will offer citizens.  A few groups have begun working on their slide show and the good copy of their constitution. Students will need their devices to finish up their slideshow tomorrow.
