Pioneer Transportation

In our math unit on fractions and decimals we subtracted decimals. Although the MMS textbook suggested 3 ways to do this, all the grade 4 students prefer to use place value charts to find the differences between decimals. Students made good progress with the practice work in their textbooks.

In language, students continued working on list 25 spelling words.

Because students attended art class with Ms. Pattenick today, we did not have speech time in class. Students are reminded that the good copy of speeches is due tomorrow. Please remember that speeches must be between 2 and 3 minutes long. Students will be penalised if their speech is longer or shorter than this time.

We continued with our inquiry unit on Pioneers. Students worked independently or in a group to discover the modes of transportation that pioneers used. We came across many new words, like corduroy roads and stagecoaches. Students had many new pioneer-related words to add to our class chart of A-Z of pioneer words. When they were done, they were challenged to complete an eighth page of their own A-Z booklet. Yesterday, we played a game that was played by settlers - Charades. Pioneer parents encouraged this game because they believed it was good brain exercise. The grade 4s had a lot of fun playing this game.

We ended our day with our Little House in the Big Woods novel study. We discussed what happened at Grandpa's house and how the family used maple sap in many ways. Students shared about one of their favourite sweet treats. Students used the rest of their class time to read chapter 9. The response page for chapter 9 is due on Monday.

Students attended French, art, and gym class today.
