Making Butter and Cheese

In our math unit on fractions and decimals we added and subtracted money amounts. Before we began, we discovered how dimes relate to tenths (10 ¢ = $ 0.1 or $ 0.10) and how pennies relate to hundredths (1 ¢ = $0.01). Students practiced estimating and  finding sums and differences in money amounts.

In arithmetic, we learned that the fraction line in a fraction is also a division line. Students practiced dividing numerators by denominators.

In language, students wrote their list 25 spelling test. Tests are coming home today. We spent some time reviewing capitalization rules for proper nouns and special days as well as using apostrophes in contractions.

Students used part of their speech time to memorise their speech. They then used the remainder of the time to say what they remembered to a buddy and then listened to their buddy say their speech. Students are challenged to memorise their speech this weekend.

We continued with our inquiry unit on Pioneers. Students worked independently or in a group to discover how pioneers made butter and cheese. We came across many new words, like curds and whey. Students had many new pioneer-related words to add to our class chart of A-Z of pioneer words. When they were done, they were challenged to complete an ninth page of their own A-Z booklet. We played another game pioneer parents thought was a good brain exercise - Twenty Questions. It was a fun time and a good way to practice our pioneer vocabulary.
