The Real World Safety Pledge

We had a busy day back to school after the long weekend. We began with our Digital Citizenship inquiry unit. Students who have not yet had a turn to present their “Two Kinds of Stupid” assignment did this in the first half of our inquiry time. Students were introduced to the “Real World Safety Pledge” which includes guidelines that help to keep students safe. Students agreed to abide by these guidelines. They will be showing these guidelines to parents tonight. Please take time to discuss what we learned in class with your child. We then reviewed the video about Amy’s Choice that was watched last week. Students referred to the sections of the pledge that Amy did not follow, resulting in her being in a risky situation. Students then began reading risky scenarios. In each scenario they identified the risk, the part of the pledge that the scenario relates to, and what could have been done to minimize the risk.

We had novel study time next. Students have been assigned to read Chapter 9 of Bridge to Terabithia and the responses for Chapter 9 (incorrectly labeled “Chapter 8” in the duo-tang). This work is due tomorrow.

After recess we had language time. We are learning about the criteria for report writing in the format of an interview. Students read a sample of good report writing. They generated and discussed a list of strengths the writer had.

In math, students took up the homework that was assigned last week on algebraic expressions. Next they continued writing and understanding algebraic expressions by working on practice questions 4 – 11 on p. 380 – 381 of the MMS 7 textbook. They began evaluating algebraic expressions. For homework they are to complete questions 1, 2, 3, 4 & 7 from page 385 & 386 of the MMS 7 textbook and worksheet pages 210 & 211. The tentative date for the unit test is Tuesday, May 28, 2019.
