Digital Citizenship

My apologies for not having a blog yesterday. I haven’t had a chance to proofread today’s blog. Please forgive any errors you find.

Yesterday we started out new inquiry unit – Digital Citizenship. The important information about this unit can be found below:

An Inquiry Into: How we express ourselves

An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

Title: Digital Citizenship

Central Idea: Being knowledgeable and engaging in safe practices will enable you to deal with challenging social situations.

Concepts: Perspective, Responsibility

Lines of Inquiry:

·         Digital literacy and ethics

·         Personal and inter-personal skills that promote positive interaction

·         Personal safety

Students participated in a Think-Pair-Share activity. The described a time when they were in a risky situation, the factors that led to them being in that situation, how they were at risk, and what they could have done to minimize the risks.

Students then watched a video about a young man who gets into trouble for what he posts online. Students discussed how he could have made different choices and avoided getting into trouble. Students received an assignment that is due next Wednesday, May 15. With parent supervision, they are to use the internet to find stories about youth and adults that have been disciplined because of content that has been posted on line. Parents, your help is needed in assisting your child in safely finding an appropriate story. Students have a worksheet to complete on their findings.

Today in inquiry time, we learned about cyberbullying. Students participated in an interactive comic called Stand By or Stand Up. Students made choices and then learned about the consequences of their choices. They know that it is everybody’s responsibility to make the internet a safe place.

We began a new novel study yesterday. Today we took up the responses for Chapter 1. Students were assigned class time to read and respond to Chapter 2. Those who did not complete this work need to complete it for homework for tomorrow.

We visited the dome to watch the JK – Grade 2 Arts Night.

When we returned, we worked on Term 3’s OWA preassessment.

I will be away tomorrow. Students will be working on their DRAs and their arts night rehearsals at the dome. They should dress warmly. They will need something to press on and a pencil. They should bring a book to read.
