Perimeter

We began our day with a math lesson. Today's lesson was about measuring perimeter. We reviewed what we learned about perimeter in grade 3. Students worked on 3 classroom objects. First they decided the most appropriate unit to use. Secondly, they estimated the perimeter of the object using apart of their body, e.g. their fingers, hands, or giant step. Then they measured perimeter using rulers and metre stick. Students whose estimates and actual measurements were not reasonable repeated their work. The remainder of class time was used to complete practice work related to perimeter.

In language, we continued working on List 31 spelling words.

In our inquiry unit on plants and soils, we examined our bean seeds and noted changes in our seed journal. Students are making notes about changes in colour, size, and texture of their seeds. They also drew a picture of their seed. Students learned that there is a "baby plant" inside the seed. This plant is protected by the hard outside of the seed called the seed coat.  We took up yesterday's independent work to discover how soil is made. Students found that their work was done correctly yesterday. Way to go, grade 4s! Today students were given 3 different soil samples. They used their senses to describe each soil's colour, texture, and smell. They answered questions to show what they understand about types of soil.

If you haven't already, please make time to visit the library to find 3 sources for your science fair project this week. Students who have their sources should begin reading and taking notes in their science journals. Remember to complete the bibliography page in your science fair duo-tang for each source you use.

We ended our working on our International Day presentation of Canada. Parents are welcome to visit this Friday between 3 pm and 3:30 pm.

Students attended French, art, and gym class today.
