We worked on speeches for the first section of our time together on
Friday. We have now heard all speeches
and have given feedback to all students. Parents, ask to see the written
feedback your child received and give them further feedback as they work on
memorizing and practicing the speech this weekend. The goal is to have all
speeches 100% memorized and to work on improving the presentation of the speech
as per teacher, peer, and parent feedback. The in-class contest takes place on
Tuesday, February 4th. All students must wear blazers – no hoodies –
for the oral competition.
Next, we continued working on our How we organize ourselves inquiry
unit. We took up Thursday’s mapping homework as a class. We continued having
students share the results of their Global
Connections Treasure Hunt. Countries that were mentioned were pinned on our
class map. In addition to the countries that were pinned earlier this week, students
should be able to identify and locate Madagascar, Russia, Italy, China,
Tanzania, and New Zealand on the blank map they received on Thursday. Students
should use this map as a study tool to prepare for the unit test. They are
encouraged to study as we go and not leave the studying to the end of the unit.
We watched a Funny Jimmy Kimmel Can You Name a Country? video to
motivate us to know more about our global connections.
Our goal for today’s inquiry lesson was for students
to develop an understanding of what is meant by the social, political, economic
and physical aspects of a country or a region. We did this through a cooperative
group activity using pictures.
At the end of the activity, students had a clearer
understanding of these concepts. Parents, test your child by asking them to
define and provide examples for each term: physical, economic, political, and
social. These terms will definitely be on the unit test but are also necessary
to solidly understand as we will look at Canada, the USA, and other countries
through these concepts as a way to understand global connections.
Students attended music class with Mr. Oliver, French
class with Mme. Stella and math class with Ms. Joseph. In math students went over the review package with Ms. Joseph.
For homework, students are to study for the unit test. The unit test will be
written on Monday, February 3rd.
